Why you transfer??

Most colleges require prospective transfer students to write essay about the reason they want to transfer. I know you guys have reasons like location, programs, financial aids, etc. In fact, I'd like to transfer because I am unsatisfied with the admission this year. The only reason I want to transfer is the fame and prestige other colleges like Ivy league schools have. What should I do? Do I have to find other reasons like programs or locations? Please share your ideas with me.

not to be mean… but theyd probably tell you to grow up… no doubt a lot of ppl go to harvard because of the prestige… but they dont say that…

YES you need other reasons… and no, not location… youre there for school, not for cruising… if youre a business major, research a school and see what kinda opportunities they have with the markets and job placement and interships etc… maybe famous faculty…

if youre a science major, maybe they have good research, great opportunities bla bla… you can try to say you want the prestige, but my guess is that theyd read that and throw your app away…

There are a few good threads about this. You can look through the Ivy forums and see that, for example, mentioning location or prestige are the fastest ways to get rejected. My guide on a tour of Columbia mentioned this TWICE.

That being said, you should have a laundry list of reasons as to why you want to attend a specific college. The ability to study with and do research with a certain professor, a certain campus initiative that you’d like to join, some facilities that the prospective school provides (I remember a Yalie’s essay about using the printing presses in the basement of her residential college), and many other reasons are perfectly valid.

^ well said hellojan :)

show them that you actually know something about the school :)

for example, in my usc essays, i wrote about about wanting to work with a specific professor in my field, and about the film classes id want to spend my elective on(something thats very popular at usc) and also about their affiliations with nearby hospitals as well as them buying them(which was rumored then, and which is done now)… unless youre a super genius whose discovered some scientific breakthrough or whatever, and they come to you asking you to enroll, then youll need to know a lot about the school most likely :)

gl!

Mention prestige over and over.

millermiller, those are kinds of reasons for wanting to transfer will not give you a happier/more fulfilling college experience.

also, just because a school is an Ivy League doesn’t mean it will offer you the best education in your field. For example, Cal Poly has an AMAZING architecture program that could really rival most Ivies, Carnegie Melon has one of the best theater/directing programs in the country, Northwestern has one of the best journalism, schools like Bard/Grinnell/Johns Hopkins have phenomenal writing programs.
