Wifi in UCR?

From what I heard, UCR doesn't have an open wifi in dorms so you have to use wired connections via ethernet cable. My question is, is it possible, or even legal for this matter, to bring a wifi router to create a wifi for my usage?

I heard there was.

Care to elaborate more on that?

You are correct. There is no wifi in the dorms (unless they added it this summer, but i doubt it from what i’ve heard). I’m not sure what the answer to your question is though. I downloaded connectify so my laptop could emit wifi for me to use with my itouch.

Well given that there is no wifi in dorms, is there some sort of wifi elsewhere on campus?

i believe wifi works everywhere except for the rooms in the dorms.

From what I’ve found searching around, the entire campus has wifi. Some of the dorm rooms pick it up, some don’t. They give everyone in the dorms an ethernet cable. So you may get ethernet and wifi or just ethernet. Some roomies have their own router to share with that room. It’s technically not allowed, but some are doing it anyway. So I guess you have to find out your situation when you get there. I don’t think bringing a router is a bad idea, your roomies may even chip in for it :)

^right. but MOST dorms dont get it. i just know a couple people in pentland who got it SOMETIMES. its unreliable at best in the dorm rooms. you’re good on campus though.

You’re not “allowed” to set up wifi in the dorms, but I remember setting up temporary networks on my laptop to play games with my friends back when I was a freshie.

I don’t know what they would do if you brought an actual router to set up wifi though, assuming that’s possible
