I plan on going up to fsu with a mac laptop and I was wondering what the wireless service is like on campus, specifically in Jennie Murphree hall. Would you recommend purchasing one of those internet things that you stick into the computer to get service? SN: Sorry but I don't know the name of the "internet thing" lol.

An ethernet cord? Only a couple dorms have wi-fi, I think Wildwood, Degraff, and maybe two others? I don’t think Jennie Murphee does, but I could be wrong. If it doesn’t have wi-fi, you will absolutely have to buy an ethernet cord! Make sure it’s long enough, in case the jack is far away from where you want to have your laptop I got mine in one of those packages that they offer at the FSU computer store They’re pretty cheap and you can buy them anywhere, so no worries :P

Wildwood, DeGraff, and Landis definitely do. You may be able to get a [weak] signal if your dorm’s building is near one of those because I had one when sitting outside of Suwanee.
But yeah, an ethernet cord is pretty cheap and you’ll get faster speeds anyway.

edit: The laptop deals they have in the computer bundles are pretty bad (though it’s not a bad thing to help fund the school anyway)… >_>
I got more than what was in the bundle + a better laptop for under $500.

Haha, yeah, they are pretty bad in price, but I just wanted to get it all sent to me here before I went over there >.< and I bought my Mac separately to get one with better processor and higher gHz than the ones offered at the FSUCS Unfortunately, it cost a lot!

So in other words, if you’re not in a dorm that has wifi or a few other places on campus then you will have no internet service? That means I wouldn’t service at all in my dorm and I don’t feel like thats very practical. The internet thing that I was talking about is the mobile broadband card that you plug into your computer, but it costs like $60/month.

All of the residence halls have ethernet jacks, and internet access is included in your rent. You just need an ethernet cord, and you can access the internet just fine, and as DNerd stated, it’s faster than WiFi.

Every dorm room has the same number of ethernet jacks as beds. Every student can plug in and get internet. Some dorms, lots of buildings (libraries, classroom buildings), and Landis Green have wireless. The bookstore sells 14 foot ethernet cables for pretty reasonable so you can plug in and move around your room with a wired connection. You are not allowed to set up a wireless hub using the ethernet in your room. I don’t think it is necessary to pay for a mobile broadband card when you can use a cable for free.

I’m bringing a 25’ cable in case I have to wind it behind a bunch of furniture. Also, I’m bringing a bunch of electric power strips too to plug all my stuff into–is that ok with housing rules?

I wonder where FSU is with installing a campus-wide wifi setup? Technology costs are cheaper than ever, and technology advancements should make it more feasible than ever. It’d probably be tricky installing campus-wide wifi with all the brick buildings and solid interior walls.

Oh ok thanks for clearing that up guys because that is a major relief. It would be ridiculous to buy the mobile broadband.
