Wig and Makeup Design

I know this forum is for musical theater majors, but my major dealswith musical theater. I was wondering if anyone knew of any good schools with Wig and Makeup Design majors that were not too hard to get into. I am already looking at NC School of the Arts, and University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Both of those require portfolios of prior work, but I live in a really small town (we don't even have a community theater, or theater classes at my high school.), and I am not sure how I can get the experience to compose a portfolio, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!!

I just got curious and Googled it. Webster University has a Wig and Makeup Design program. I didn't even know such a BFA existed though I think most good overall theatre design programs will offer courses in it. There is also an old thread called Theatre Design and Production you might want to look at. Their website is apparently down right now, but it looked like Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago had summer internships in it, so you might want to check them out if you go with a straight design major. Hope this helps.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much!!

My Ss attend Webster...they have mentioned that the head of the department of wig and makeup design is at the top of the league. If you want to know more about Webster from a student's perspective feel free to email me or one of my Ss who has posted under the alias "NastyNate". Nasty he really isn't!! LOL

Break a leg.

What program did your S go into?? How hard was it to get into?? Thanks!

theaterbrat,

I have twin Ss who are going to be Sophomores at Webster in the fall. They are both in the MT program. Each year Webster takes in an average of about 30 of MT and acting (Regionals) combined students each year.

FYI, evidently there is no one currently taking Wig and Makeup design as BFA major at Webster. So if you were to go there you would get one on one instruction with a fabulous teacher. You would also have the wonderful opportunity to work side by side with the St. Louis Rep. which shares the same facilities as Webster.

Here is a link for the faculty at Webster: http://www.webster.edu/depts/finearts/theatre/Assets/conservepages/faculty.html
Samatha Wootten is the instructor and I would contact her for more information.

I must confess, if I could turn back the hands of time (about 27 years) Wig and Makeup Design for Theatre is definitely what the path I would take. What a great profession to unleash creativity.

Good Luck!!

Thanks!! I just hope I have some creativity to unleash! If I could turn back time, I would have started singing earlier and stuck with dancing so I could go into MT, but alas I did not.
