So, I read on the Colgate website that they offer weeklong camping trips in the Adirondacks before freshman orientation. does anyone know how many kids go on these/ are they popular? Is it bad if you don't/can't do one? And I notice that with the secondtrip you arrive a little late for orientation, does this pose any problems? I've never really been camping before, would I be okay to go on one? I run a lot so I'm in good shape. If any current Colgate students could comment on them that would be very helpful.

I remember that they are fairly limited in the number of incoming students who can sign up. The information about the trips come late in the Spring along with all the other piles of Orientation info and it was first come first served.

I'm pretty sure you can do similar activities later on, in fact, you can get a start as part of satisfying your P.E. requirements and then if you like it, sign up for more.

My D, who's a freshman, had planned to go on the second of the two pre-orientation Wilderness Adventure trips this past August, but then cancelled when she found it partly conflicted with tailend of the Cove community service project she had also signed up for and would also mean missing a last week with her HS boyfriend.

When she was home for Winter break she was talking about taking one of the Outdoor Education Classes in the Spring. They sound pretty awesome to me.

Here are some of the current ones:

If you go up for a visit, you can visit the Base Camp (the Outdoor Ed Office) on campus and learn more.

Oh, thank you for your reply. I'd heard about similiar trips from other friends going to different colleges and was just curious about Colgate's pre-orientation stuff. Those outdoor ed programs do sound awesome! I got in early decision to Colgate, so I'll probably try to do one of them while I'm there. Thanks again!

i went on the first round of wilderness adventure and it was awesome. they offer many different levels, so you can choose the difficulty. i had never really gone camping before, but i was fine. and since, i have also taken outdoor ed trips (i have friends in outdoor ed)...they are all really fun.

it doesn't matter at all if you do the second one, it won't interfere with orientation (although you might arrive at your orientation group dirty since you will be coming straight from the woods).

I went on the second round and also thought that it was a great experience. I know a large number of people who went on trips. It was nice to show up on campus with 5 (7 if you count the upperclassmen guides) friends.

I got back early on move in day, and got to my room before any of my roommates. So no problems there.
