Wildfire!??!

I read about a fire and some evacuations. Everybody ok? Is this a regualr threat this time of year?

Just got back from Malibu. Most students are on campus in the gym and cafeteria. Some snuck out to go to friends off campus. So far they are ok. It is a fire area and the security is highly trained for these instances.

Malibu has a major wildfire every few years. I think that this is the first time Pepperdine has been so threatened, but given the Santa Ana wind conditions the only question was where was the fire going to be, not if.

Next up: mudslides in Malibu this winter, the normal follow-up to the wildfires.

(It might also help to understand that Malibu stretches for 27 miles along the coast, so other parts could be fine and smoke-free depending on the direction of the wind. They normally close Pacific Coast Highway if there's any fire up there to give emergency crews access -- there aren't a lot of other entry points.)

I'm sure that Pepperdine has an evacuation plan -- they also have a lot of cleared space on their campus that is very defensible.

Pepperdine has been in danger in the past. This is a campus that should absolutely have it's safety plans well rehearsed (as it appears to have done at this point).

There was a devastating fire during the 80's and another that was close to Pepp in 1993. We have the best firefighters in the country to deal with this stuff. You should feel comforted that firefighters come from all over the state to assist and they form fantastic strike forces. You are in good hands, just wear your face mask to avoid the smoke...and if you have a car you may want to change your air filter within a few days. Good luck!

He is a freshman at a dorm on campus and they were told to evacuate to the basketball gym.

By the time we called him, he was already back in his dorm.

Today, MOnday, there were no classes.

We were really scared. I saw on the news that the Ralph's supermarket was closed off and the bank building had damage - that's usually where we shop for supplies for our son. But they were saying the damage was very minimal in that shopping area.

Hope it all gets contained soon. That was too close for comfort

Keeping all of you in our prayers!!

Talked to D today...bushes around the cross tower at the entrance were burned, palmtrees and rumors of a couple of campus vehicles. Air quality much better today! The wind blows it out to sea. She said her room did not smell as it was closed up tight.

I was just up there. I am applying in the Spring and am at Pepperdine at least 4 or 5 times a week. They evacuated everyone from the dorms to the cafeteria. I will go up today or tomorrow if I can get through and will report back. I hear sirens right now so I am praying everyone is ok and the University has not been harmed.

The campus is fine. They are opening the roads from the north this evening. Kanan Cyn is open , but Malibu cyn. will remain closed. The campus will open for classes tomorrow. The fire is 15% contained and to the south of Pepperdine at this point.
Thanks for the prayers.

Hey everyone! I was just at the campus last night! Pepperdine is fine! yay! School is back in session today. Actually Kanan Dume Road is closed (again). There was a fatal car accident this morning. (So weird I just drove through it last night) Topanga Canyon is open too! I tried to get through Malibu Canyon but like the above poster said that is still closed. Fire is away from Pepperdine. I did see what was left of the church that burned, very sad indeed. Let's keep praying for the firefighters!!
