I am about to be a senior and I will have a gpa of 3.2 for a-g if you include the 8 semester bonus points from AP/Honors before my summer break ends. I earlier thought I had a 3.4, but I made a mistake. I know my GPA is really low, as I haven't tried at all in sophomore year, and I only started improving in my second semester of junior year. However, I've also done many AP Online classes such as AP Psychology (1 year), AP Gov, and I am planning to do one semester of AP Econ. I also managed to get a 2050 in SAT 1. I don't have any really notable extracurricular to list except for playing a large role in a school wide fundraiser to raise money for victims of Japan Earthquake/tsunami. My community service hour total is average.

I was hoping I can have some chance by showing an upward trend in academics (high grades in 2nd semester of junior year, and lots of additional ap classes during summer break with A's). I managed to try hard and get a pretty good score on the SAT, showing If I try I can succeed. I also do have some special circumstances for my bad marks in sophomore year, so I hope to make a really good personal statement on what happened and how I overcame my difficulties. With that in mind, is there a good chance I can get into a decent UC school?

My dream goal is UC Irvine. I would also like to go to Davis or Santa Barbara. If I can't reach any of those, UC Riverside or UC Santa Cruz are options too.

Hey, from what I can tell, you have a pretty decent GPA to get into UCSB or Irvine or Davis, personally, I really like Davis for its academic variety and the overall strength in its undegraduate programs. So, I’d advise, if you can, to try to take the SAT’s again in the fall, October or November, and just do extremely well 1st semester of senior year, a lot of studying and hard work could raise that GPA a teeny bit. Also, do you live in CA, because if you wanna attend UC’s their out of state tuition is quite costly. Last word of advice, try to make your personal statement as perfect as possible, for whatever your inconsistencies, talk about your strengths and your goals. Also, some if not all UC’s are extremely competitive with each getting an enormous amount of applications.

In short, you have a decent chance at SB, and at Irvine, Davis might be a tiny reach but its not unreachable, and Riverside and Santa Cruz are good safeties.

Thanks for your perspective/advice! Yeah I will take the SAT again in october and see if I can aim for a 2100+. However, I thought your senior grades don’t affect your GPA at all? Since the deadline for UC application is november 30th, that is before the first semester of senior year ends and UC’s won’t count that right? Right now I’m focusing on my ap online class and making sure I receive an A mark so that can raise my gpa before summer break officially ends in august 30th.

California state universities, like SDSU. Also, I don’t think the first semester of senior year matters (only what courses you’re taking, but it doesn’t factor into GPA)

Ur gpa is really low for ucsb (idk about uci/ucd) but ur sat score is pretty solid. Also, from what I understand, a low gpa and high sat doesnt show colleges that u can succeed when u try…it just shows that u don’t try. I think u have a decent shot at ucsc and ucr though

Thanks for the honest chance steles. However, I don’t think getting a 2000+ in SAT is easy, I had to really study my butt for it. My grades were low because I didn’t try in sophomore year (also due to external problems). I’m also doing a bunch of ap level online courses that are uc approved and getting A’s in them. I believe it shows an upward trend (I didn’t try before, but now I’m trying).

hello chocolate20. I would like to know if you got accepted by now. I am in the EXACT same position as you and would like to know how you did. Anything you can do helps! Thank you in advance! :)

Hahaha … Bro I got into all the UC’s+WL at Stanford with those scores…Oh and I applied to UCI/SD/B…So dont worry…also DO you what the best part of this is…Im international too :p
