Will a B hurt me?

I got straight A's my freshman year and I got all A's the first semester of sophomore year. But for 2nd semester of my sophomore year, I got one B in Precalculus Honors. How much will this B matter in college admissions, particularly to top colleges?

What will they think about this B in an honors class in terms of A's in the AP classes I also took this year? Any advice moving forward would be helpful.

Do you think that the only acceptees to top schools have 4.0s? That is your answer.

Better start looking at your local community colleges

Etuck is right.

In retrospect, I know it sounds silly. I realize that there are students who have lower grades than I do and would love to be in my position but I know the admission process is very competitive right now and I’d like to know what I can do in order to still be a viable applicant. I just don’t want them to think I slacked off considering it’s second semester.

@T26E4 Well, of course not. I know 4.0s get rejected but obviously an A is better than getting a B. I suppose you’re trying to say that it really doesn’t matter that much?

@Etuck I know this is CC and your answer was inevitable but honest suggestions would be nice.

“I suppose you’re trying to say that it really doesn’t matter that much?” Correct. One B alone will not get you rejected or admitted to any top-tier school.

One B won’t hurt but make sure you do well in Junior year. I think Junior is the worst, so many things to do, so little time for everybody.

ok i’ll take that into consideration. do you think I still have a shot at becoming valedictorian though? (I was second before the B) my UW GPA might drop to a 3.9 I’m guessing?

You have to rely on others slipping up if you were #2 then get a B. You’ll probably fall back 3 or 4 spots assuming the others behind you got all A’s. Our Val this year got all A’s all 4 years in HS. Rest assured you can still get into an ivy/top school without being a val/sal.

We have no way of determining your chances at Valedictorian…
