I know my grades are pretty good overall...but I'm really angry about the B in math. Math always used to to my best subject, but I didn't do as well as I would've liked to. Overall, would the B in math hurt my chances of getting into Stanford, assuming I get straight A's for the rest of High School? This may sound like a stupid question, I only ask because I know that there will be plenty of people more qualified than me.

Short answer: no. I know a girl who got a B in her junior year math class (not AP BC) and still got into Stanford. Plus, you’re only in 9th grade.

im in 9th grade too and sunsh0wers is right
not that i know anything. But you can always bring grade up. stanford people aren’t all 4.0 gpa and ace SAT etc. We’re all human. Except those super smarties arent.

Yep! I’ve come to realize that Stanford puts a lot of emphasis on essays…all the people I know who got accepted this year/last year actually had either mediocre grades or standardized test scores, but AMAZING essays (I read all of them, and Stanford does this thing where the admissions counselor sends you a note telling you what stood out about your app - at least for those who got in early). So don’t lose hope just because you ended up with a B your freshman year. (Warning, though; it only gets harder next year.)

Thanks both of you. I was really stressed about this because I’m the type of person who feels like they “need” to get Straight A’s. Hope to redeem myself next year.

in the same boat as you

Don’t worry about the B. As long as you’re taking (one of) the most rigorous course load(s) your school offers and doing as well as you’re doing now, you’ll be doing great, academically at least, for Stanford or any other top school. Extracurriculars are another issue though.

Logically it would be better if you had gotten an A, but Stanford is the most selective university in the country and you probably won’t get in no matter what you do, so questions like this always strike me as missing the point. Even so, the B isn’t going to make your chances much worse. They say
So freshman year doesn’t matter as much as the rest of high school. (I sometimes hear people say that Stanford doesn’t care about freshman year grades at all, and that might also be true, but this is all I could find on their actual website.)
