Will a B kill you?

i have a fairly strong resume in terms of grades, sat's, ec's, reccs and so on
however, for my grades, i have all A's and A-'s in all ap and honors classes...except AP math where i keep getting a B
i got a 760 on the math SATII, and i usually get 90's on tests in AP math but i always seem to screw up on enough tests that my grade is pulled down to a B
my question is, if i get A's in subjects like AP history and AP spanish, and i'm not majoring in math, where i am getting a B, will it ruin my chances for ivies?

or will ivies not care as much since it is clear that i am challenging myself in an area that i am not going to study in college

also, without my AP Math grade, my gpa is much much nicer

One B will not kill you if you are unique and have a great EC’s and are “famous” or stand out really well.

for example, Natalie Portman got into Harvard and James Franco in Columbia because they are famous or stand out right away.
Your ticket to Ivies is to stand out…grades are good, your good, standardized tests must be tops but STAND OUT

One B won’t kill you. I got 3 B’s so far…I didn’t die. Don’t worry :]

Of course not. College admissions are holistic, and as long as they see that you are challenging yourself in an area that is not your particular forte, it’ll be ok. Relax :)

i agree with previous posters.
On the other hand, math is important. You’re in a pickle if you wanna major in science. (who wants to major in math lol)

Premed= multivariable calc.
Business= calc+ stats

Unless your going into humanities, math is gonna be important.

I have a C+, two B-s, a D, and probably some more B-s from the new semester. Note, these grades are from semesters and not accumulative. After taking some classes at a community college, my GPA has been moved up to a strong 3.75/4.00. My ECs are above average I’ve been told (if you want a list, ask). I guess these would be some differences to point out though? Err, I’m not braggin about anything fyi, just pointing out some possible differences.

I’m a urm

I’m first generation

I have a 230 PSAT and a 2320 SAT. MY ACT is 34 accumulative.

Schools I’m looking at are Pomona, Whitman, Reed, CMC, Occidental, Stanford, and Pitzer.

@CC’er i’m definetly majoring in humanities
in fact…i seem to get worse grades in sciences, so i’m taking two histories next year instead of a science

@pillowfight, you make me kind of sad
i’m not as famous as those people :frowning:
oh well

also i might as well ask, does a rising gpa help?
i’m definetly having an upward trend right now
estimating something kinda like
3.6
3.75
3.9

Yes, a B will kill you. Make sure to hire some bodyguards.

That’s why no one ever gets into an ivy-league school with a B. Oh wait…

That’s why everyone going to college is perfect. Oh wait…

Really, no matter what your grades are, if you put in applications to enough colleges of varying strengths, you’ll find one that’s a match for you who will accept you. Have at it.

true. i could drop out of high school and go to a community college. but my parents would never speak to me again.
and in fact very few people get into ivies with a B in ap math…
the stupid people with connections aren’t in ap math in the first place

I’ve gotten plenty of B’s and I’m still goin’ strong lol

it’s not going to help you but i wouldn’t say you’re dead either, haha. i’m going to an ivy and i got several B’s in high school. intense courseload, but still.

I wouldn’t worry about it. One B is not going to kill you, especially if it was in an AP class in the middle of a rigorous courseload. I got a B in AP Calculus too but an 800 on the Math II SAT, although that … … might be because I’m lazy.

Regardless! You have so many opportunities to stand out, so take them and just forget about the B. If you focus on other things, chances are that colleges will focus on them as well when looking at your application. Which is not to say that you should fail things you are not interested in. But … you know.
