In my sophomore year, I received a B- in my 1st semester of chemistry and a C+ in 2nd semester. However, I had A’s in all my other classes except for Algebra 2, which dropped to a B second semester. Junior year was pretty strong, as I achieved nearly all A’s except for 3 B’s the entire year. I have a 3.7 unweighted GPA and a 4.13 weighted gpa. By the end of high school, I will have taken 11 AP courses and exams. I’ve also taken college courses outside of school and aced all of them. I would say I have pretty good extracurriculars. For a complete list look at my 3rd most recent post.
Yes it will, especially at UCLA where over 110k applicants apply. Probably tens of thousands near 4.0’s with no C’s and a lot of them get rejected.
You’ve taken 11 AP Courses through only 3 years? Sounds like you overloaded yourself with a much too rigorous schedule. Try not to make the same mistake senior year and if you can get all A’s first semester senior year, then some private colleges (not UCLA though unfortunately) will appreciate that.
@rdeng2614 I said that by the end of high school, I will have taken 11 AP courses. I took 1 AP freshman year, 1 AP sophomore year, 4 AP’s junior year, and will be taking 5 next year. It didn’t seem too rigorous or too overwhelming, and I did rather well in my AP classes. I was just terrible at chemistry and it seemed as if all the help in the world couldn’t save my grade in that class However, would schools be willing to overlook that one C if my other stats and extracurriculars seem pretty good, assuming I have something that kind of stands out? Also, would I fare better at NYU, if not UCLA?
While a C and maybe a B here and there will definitely hurt your chances, I frankly do not believe that all is lost with UCLA. Your rigor will definitely show and might explain it - also you must factor in your ECs. While UCLA will definitely be a reach for you, you would fare better at NYU. It is more realistic; however, keep in mind that NYU cares about whether or not you are applying for financial aid and what not.
Wow It’s been 6 years, and I completely forgot this thread existed. I was just looking through old CC posts for nostalgia’s sake, and felt the need to drop in and give the update that I ended up graduating from UCLA in June 2020 with a B.A. in Economics and Communication Studies.
No one will probably read this, but in the case that an anxious high school senior roaming this forum has stumbled onto this thread, please know that all hope is not lost! College Confidential can be a terribly toxic place, with strangers eager to bring you down without fully knowing your story or potential. Don’t let them get you down! Have faith in your abilities and trust that things will work out the way they’re supposed to. And who knows, the most seemingly impossible might just become reality
