I am a senior at what is considered to be the toughest school in my state. I am currently taking a college-level Calculus II class, and am I afraid I will end up with a D at the end of the semester this December.

My GPA is a 3.85 unweighted and my ACT is a 31. I have strong extracurriculars, and have A's in all the other classes I'm taking right now. I have no other D's on my transcript, but did make a C in my second semester chemistry class last year. If it makes a difference, I do not plan on majoring in anything math/science related.

Will this hurt my college admissions chances? What about scholarships? There are several full-ride scholarships at a few third-tier schools I plan on applying for.

I don't know of any scholarships that state you must get all As. You're challenging yourself with a college class, so it won't be that bad. It wont' kill your chances. Colleges might look down upon a 27(depending on which colleges you're looking at) ACT but realize that the student may have more. A high test score will make up for a low GPA, but your GPA is not bad at all so I wouldn't worry too much. Ask your teacher what you can as well.

Hello there,
Yes I think getting a D will kill your chance of getting in universities depends on how competitive the college admissions are. But, at my school they say that if your a senior and you receive a D in the second semester, you will automatically get rejected from the 4-year colleges you first apply to and got accepted. That letter of acceptance does not mean anything because if your grades are bad in second semester, you will get rejected. I'm not sure its like that in your district. Our district are like that though. Even though your taking a REALLY Challenging AP Class and receive a D in that class, its going to look Horrible when you apply for private/public universities. Colleges do not want to see any D's on your transcript, even getting a C is already pretty bad. I'm in the same position as you are, I'm a senior and I'm taking Math Analysis which is Pre-Calc. and I'm doing horrible in that class and I'm sooo darn afraid that I'm going to fail and have no chance of getting a better grade before college apps. Anyways, try to study really hard and take lots of notes in AP Calculus and to really try hard to bring that grade up before its too late or if its way too hard for you, then just drop back to regular Calculus. I know it won't look as good as an AP Class. It's not worth it if you get a D in a AP Class. Besides that, your ACT/GPA looks pretty good and WOW! You have an incredibly high ACT Score, lucky you!!

At least for the University of Georgia, a D would be a problem.
From the above link:
"Please note: A challenging schedule will not counterbalance a non-competitive GPA, as your grades ultimately remain the single most important factor. Additionally, any grades of D or F on your transcript— especially in your junior or senior year—would be cause for concern on the part of our Admissions Committee and should be addressed in your application."

You need to think carefully and maybe considering dropping the class, a D is huge for college admissions..even if you are taking college courses, because it reflects that you can't handle the workload, whereas a B in a college course shows that you are trying...just my two cents

will a D in one of my first semester classes in 10th grade that was brought up to a C second semester hurt me?And will getting an A or B in a higher level of that class this year help me?its the most nerve wrecking part of my transcript

Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately, it is too late in the year for me to drop the class. Fortunately, I'm happy to say that after getting my second test in the class back I now have a C average and it is very possible for me to have a B by the end of the semester.

haha omg i read the title of this thread and i was so into CC mode that I thought you were asking if having a daughter (D) would kill your chances. lol...as in teenage pregnancy....k omg wow lol i really need to get a life=)

to answer your question, i think you'll be fine. i know a senior from our school last year who was accepted and is currently attending WashU (St. Louis) and he got a C in his first semester of Differential Equations (the highest level math class taught at my school) as a senior. but obviously he had great grades before then. in fact if i remember correctly, that math class was what killed his 4.0.

^ YAY! I wasn't the only one who misread the title. I didn't even realize he meant a D in a class until it said something near the middle about the D's transcript. At first, I was like, why the heck would a kid you had in December have a transcript. Glad to know I'm not the only one in CC mode. :D

Frankly a transcripts with C's or D's in high school will hurt you. Ideally you might be able to explain this with a personal story or even better, treat this like a challenge and conclude it with taking the next semester of calc and getting an A or tutoring in math or something along those lines. Depending on the type of school that you are applying to, you may be competing with lots of analogous students who don't have C's or D's. Best of luck.

Well I talked to some students at the schools who said theyve had as many or more "C"s as me and I plan on writing in my statement how I stayed after a lot for tutoring and im taking an upperlevel class(stats) to compesate and so far im doing good(A)
