I'm a junior right now and I currently have a 67.8% in AP Calculus A right now, which I'm freaking out about. If I give it my all, I can maybe receive a C on my final report card for first semester (which is in about one month). But if I don't get a C, will a D totally ruin my colleges of going to UC's, CSUs, or privates? My grades are currently A's and B's except for calc. If I do get a D, I will probably retake the class in summer school, but I also wanted to know if colleges ignore your first semester grade and replace it with the summer school grade? Please help!!! Btw my colleges of choice would be: UCD, USF. CSLB, SDU,UCSD. SFSU, Seattle U, CSEB, University of Portland.

As I was led to understand, even if you retook the class, schools can still view the original grade you received for the subject. Yes, a D for a major A-G subject class looks bad, but don’t worry too much about it.

To give you an example, I nearly failed my AP U.S. History class in junior year. Managed to received a D instead. Because of this, some of my chances with top tier schools like UCLA and UCB were dashed, but many of my choices still accepted me. One of them was UCSD, which I noticed is on your list. If you can somehow get a C, great job. If not, retake the class if you want (I didn’t due to time management issues). However, make sure you pick up the slack in other departments (SAT’s, ACT, application essays, EC’s, and all that jazz), and you’ll still have a strong chance of making it in.

Getting a D will hurt you BUT if you have good test scores and keep your gpa up and have lots of service hours they might look past it. A know a kid who got an F In an engineering class and is still getting accepted to college however he does have a 35 act

Yes it will get noticed. However it can be mitigated if you show steady upward trend (C, B and A) in later semesters. Study hard, if you can’t keep up with the work, consider dropping down to an easier math class

The CSU/UC Matrix below states that a grade of C or better in the 2nd sememster of a Math course will validate a D/F in the first semester. Yes, they will see your D but it can be validated or replaced by retaking.

It also depends on your school. My son’s schools only show the end of year grade. What is your school’s policy? If you get a D, but end up with a B at the end, that shows how much you tried. Ask your counselor what actually shows on your transcript, ALL semester grades, or just what the grade was at the end of the year. You may be freaking out for no reason.

Thank you for all your replies! Turns out I was panicking for nothing and I ended up getting a C as my final grade for the semester (((:
