First of all I’m not sure if this is the right forum to be in but thought it fit the point of this discussion the best. I’m a Sophmore and had been Computer Science all this time up until this last quarter where I realized I hated coding but loved computers anyways along with numbers and money. I decided to switch to Business Admin: Info Systems hoping that I could lead coding teams, play around with compute networking, or be a data base manager for some company. However, I have also heard horror stories about majors in the business admin world about people not landing good paying jobs and all that jazz. Do you think BA:Infor Systems is a worthwhile degree while paired with a Comp Sci minor? If not do you have any suggestions about what might be a better alternative?
Frankly, business admins leading coding teams are exactly what developers hate, and dev-ops will manage databases/networking these days, which is usually handled by people leaning towards those subjects in CS or IS (information systems, no business admin - more of a technical degree than business).
What school is this at? What jobs you are suited for depends on the specific curriculum which varies widely when it comes to “info systems”.
Im at Seattle Pacific University. Our business program is good, and our curriculum when it comes to informations systems are:
Information and Database systems
Organizations presence in networks
Data Analytics and Visualization
Problem Solving and Programming (Basic c++ course)
and with a minor in computer science:
Problem solving and programming
Data Strucuters
Applications programming
Calc 1
What sort of Jobs do you think I could land with that major?
That’s gonna lead to more business roles leading infrastructure type decisions more than leading coding teams these days. Would you be okay doing that? Demand won’t be nearly what it is for CS but won’t be horrid. While it’s possible you could end up closer to coding, I don’t think it will in most cases. It sounds like a better fit for you though.
Thanks! I would be okay with that, building a system design for a business sounds amazing to me actually.
