Will a few on-level classes kill me?

Freshman year I took 2 “regular” classes, and I took one sophomore year, and I feel like I pulverized my chances at Brown before I even knew it. I got perfect 100s in all semesters of these classes, but still, they’re…“regular.” Freshman year I balanced this out with 3 pre-APs and sophomore year with 3 pre-APs and 1 dual credit.
My classes throughout high school include:
Freshman: 2 reg, 3 pre-AP
Sophomore: 1 reg. 3 pre-AP, 1 dual credit
Junior: 3 dual credit, 2 AP, 0 reg.
Senior: 2 dual credit, 4 AP, 0 reg.

I took the regular form of these classes because of personal issues I had with the pre-AP teachers that I really don’t want to go into. I’ve been told everything from my upward trend helps compensate (GPA, class rank, and rigor have all steadily escalated) to it’s best to pack up my dreams now and give up.

You’ll be fine. Don’t beat yourself up about something that you did a few years ago. Plenty of schools only have one option for freshmen. I took the “regular” version of classes up through my junior and senior years.

No, it won’t kill you. You did really well in the classes, and this also shows an upward trend, which colleges really like. It looks like you challenged yourself after freshman year, so I don’t think it will hurt you all that much. If you get the opportunity to interview with someone from Brown as part of the application process, you should maybe mention that after freshman year, you realized how important it was to challenge yourself in school with your classes - make it like you learned something out of the experience. I think that would probably help, too

Sorry to resurrect this, but a lot of people I ask about this seem to think that the higher level classes just weren’t offered. To clarify, I opted out of taking those few pre-AP classes for the regular version because I wasn’t exactly college-minded back when I was 14 and my school is most definitely not one that pushes students toward top 20 schools. However, I still made it a point to challenge myself. By the time I graduate I’ll have 6 pre-Ap, 8 dual credit, and 6 AP, which is one of the most rigorous curricula in my class. Will this be enough?

Yes. This is not something to be anxious about.

@bruno14 Thank you so much, again. I’m trying to have some confidence in myself but seeing all these other amazing applicants does make me a little nervous :stuck_out_tongue:
