Will a kid who isn't in to partying fit in?

I'm not a "fun-killer" and would edfinatly attend a few parties; however, I don't plan to spend every weekend drunk. Would I be able to make friends and fit in here?

Ya there are a lot of people that don’t go out every single night during the weekends. You will meet all kinds on campus as long as you put yourself out there, so don’t worry about fitting in if you don’t get wasted all the time.

Definitely! One size doesn’t fit all by any means. You will have many ways to meet friends of different kinds- ones who share some but not all of your interests (think overlapping Venn circles). You may choose to go to places with dorm friends, study with classmates, join activities and do things with those people. Check out the many student organizations for different interests that you might enjoy. You evolve in your life as a college student- you will likely start out spending time with people you meet in the dorms and then with others you meet later.

Always remember you control your life. You can say no to any activity without worry about peer pressure like you might in HS. You just find another peer group. Never worry about what the rest of the people are doing. You don’t want to go somewhere, no big deal. You will discover others like you who also stayed home instead of partying.

Thank you for that post; it is extremely reassuring. I’m really excited to be heading there in the fall!!!

The residential learning communities have fewer hardcore partiers and more activities to take the place of drinking as a main social outlet. There should be info on them in your res hall packet. Or here.

Just make sure to live on Lakeshore and not a big Southeast dorm and you’ll be fine.

Yeah, I was looking at Bradley next year, so hopefully I can get in there.

Absolutely. It’s a big place with a whole lot of different kinds of people. Live and let live, and you’ll find your niche. My son is in Chad, is anything but a partier and is enjoying UW just fine.
