I’m applying for the College Prep Scholars Program, and it asks if I’ve ever had a disciplinary action. I got suspended for one day in seventh grade for sending this vid of my friend dancing “seductively” to Selena Gomez’s “Keep My Hands To Myself” to one of my other friends for fun. Basically, I got pulled into their drama and she used that vid to report the friend who was in the vid “because it made her uncomfortable.” Because I filmed it, naturally, I got in trouble too. But I don’t understand why I got suspended a full day while they only got RPC’ed (require parent conference) when I wasn’t even part of anything going on between them. Anyway, I’m wondering if QuestBridge could still consider me? I have stellar grades and extracurricular activities and all. I really don’t want this minor incident to hold back my chances…
I emailed the school principal of my middle school to see if they put it in my records, and I’m really hoping they didn’t. The assistant principal admitted that he laughed to the video and seemed to understand that I got pulled into something; they were just doing protocol because the video still had sexual undertones. Even then, I’m considering of still explaining it to QuestBridge since I want to be genuine and explain what I learned.
I’m a student also applying so definitely not a professional but I think that question is asking for any disciplinary action you received during high school. I highly doubt they care about something silly you did in 7th grade. And even if it’s on your middle school record, it’s probably not on your high school record. You can still ask but if I were in your shoes, I probably just wouldn’t even mention it.
The incident probably wasn’t so minor to the girl you filmed. If you were in college, sending videos with “sexual undertones” to another person could get you expelled. Making fun of other people isn’t funny. If the video had been spread around campus it could have been very humiliating for the girl in it and done a lot of harm. If you think it was “minor,” you didn’t learn much.
If you have to report it I think it may affect your chances. But how much it affects your application probably depends on how you describe it and what you say you learned from it.
Oh no, it was another friend (Friend A) that was in the vid. The friend (Friend B ) who reported us is completely aware of Friend A’s tendency to make typical middle school sexual jokes. So really, Friend A was making fun of themselves. I understand that making someone uncomfortable bc of the content of the vid itself is still concerning though. I’ve completely learned my lesson about the immaturity of it all though. So if it’s not in the school records, should I still talk about it?
Middle school stuff usually don’t count, so you should be fine if you don’t include it
No 7th grade does not apply.
