Will a significant improval help?

Freshman year I took a basic schedule and had a 3.5 GPA
Sophmore year I took a basic schedule, with only 1 AP class and had a 3.3 GPA
Junior year I took 2 APs, as well as a course through a local community college and I managed to get a 4.0 GPA

I'm upset that my 4.0 is going to be brought down by being averaged in with two sucky years, but will the uphill phenomenon at least help a little bit?

Of course! Unless the colleges you are applying to have a strictly formulaic way of accepting students, then your upward trend will definitely be looked upon favorably.

I’m sure colleges will look on your improval with approvement.

3.5+3.3+4.0=10.8/3=3.6

3.6=A-

That’s a pretty solid GPA for a lot of decent colleges.

What’s even better news for you is that most colleges concentrate primarily on sophomore and junior years, which gives you an average GPA of 3.3+4.0=7.3/3=3.65

College admission officers notice improvements, they accept junior year as the most significant and also look into your AP programs to see if you’re ready for rigorous college work.

My friend, with a solid SAT score and a demonstrated commitment to extra-curricular activities, you have a very strong application to a lot of excellent schools.

Although Ivy League schools might be out of reach, I encourage you to apply to some competitive T100 schools and hope for the best.

sikorsky: LOL! That was great!

improvement is good :)

Yes your chances have improved. Although it won’t place you in the top group of students, it definitely opened a lot more doors for you. In the past few years the improvements I’ve made without a doubt provided me with many possible opportunities in the future. For now, all you need to do is keep improving, including in non-academic areas (ECs) so you can open even more doors.

I’m in a similar (and arguably more rough situation) and I need as much advice as I can get. Fresh year (no AP/H): 2.67/2.5; Soph year (no AP/H): 3.67/4.0; Junior year (1 AP, 2 H with 9 outside/independent APs): 4.5/4.5. The improvement I made is obviously nice, but I want to know how bad my fresh (and soph) year will affect me.
