Will a single B+ ruin me?

This year, I was fortunate enough to come down with not only mononucleosis, but also bronchitis, and had to have surgery on my back due to a major dance injury, resulting in a loopy period of classes that I don't remember due to all the pain meds...

Anyway, this year I managed to ruin my 11 year streak at my school of getting grades above at least an A (without extra credit - it's against my school's honor code). My results:

AP Government & Politics: A+
Adv. Biology: A
Adv. Chemistry: A (grrrrr against my teacher, who would not let me make up)
Adv. English: A+ (Course award - highest grade in class/best aptitude)
Adv. Precalculus (the hardest math class at our school - includes a lot of theory): B+
Spanish III: A+ (Course award - highest grade in class/best aptitude)

I am still able to take AP Calculus AB/BC and AP Chemistry, but I feel as if I have totally ruined my transcript for college. Seeing as Yale is my top choice (totally subject to change, I know that we all can/most likely will change our minds about these things), I would like to know if it is still feasible based solely on my grades from my prep school.

Probably making a mountain out of a molehill here, but just wanted to hear some thoughts.

Thanks!

You’re totally fine, don’t worry about it. I had 3 B’s and I did just fine.

definitely a molehill & not a mountain

A ‘B+’ and you’re asking if you can get into Yale? LOL, that made my day.

Kiddo, Yale is far out of your league now that you have a disgusting ‘B+’ on your transcript. FAR, FAR out of your reach.

You should try some schools like DeVry and the University of Kentucky.

Ah, UK… I’ve always considered myself more of a UofL girl, anyway!

Sarcasm is always appreciated… Pity it doesn’t count as a foreign language. I’m fluent ;)

On another note, feeling really SMRT right now, but I forgot to mention that this were my sophomore year results. And I also forgot to apologize for the obnoxiousness of the question to begin with - le gasp, a B+! insert dramatic faint

I don’t plan on going into math (unless I have literally just finished watching “A Beautiful Mind” for the umpteenth time), and I didn’t really like my teacher (who actually did attend Yale undergrad and Columbia grad for - not math. Confused?), so I’m just happy it’s over.

Mono never makes for a happy year. Especially when you have to pull 47 all-nighters (yes, I counted, which makes it even more depressing) just to finish the homework for each class (7 classes x 2 hours of homework for each + ECs = not a happy camper).

Anyway, what I really meant to say was thanks for the ego band-aid. My inner perfectionist was just in full spazz mode.

Again.

LOL I am also fluent in sarcasum, it’s the only I can communicate with people :). but don’t worry about the B at least it was an advance class and is only one B. Just show you can improve from that B, its okay Yale doesn’t penalize people for it. lol good luck

Is this for real? In my opinion, your results seem pretty amazing in light of your circumstances. Of course, you can always make a short note of your medical problems in the additional information section of the common application. You might get rejected from Yale, but I doubt it’ll be because of that B+.

I know how you feel. I had a perfect 12 year record except for B+ in Driver’s Ed… It’s been 4 years and I still hate her.

Seriously, nobody will care. Good luck with college apps.

Just don’t write a long essay about that B+ and how you grew from that adversity.

Sorry, but your chances of recieving admission from Yale are close to zero after that B. Try junior college for two years. Is that what you wanted to hear? Of course you can still get in.

i doubt it, when applying on the app it asks if theres been any reason whyy grades have slipped, or something resembling that, that ur guidance counselor fills out. If shes aware of your surgery, etc. you’ll be fine. Also, you took an advanced class, so gettting a B+ is still good! =)

I don’t want to sound rude, but that was a stupid question. You are clearly a smart kid to have gotten such good grades. Yet again, admission is not guaranteed whether you get a B+ or an A. Shake it off, you have bigger fish to fry.

I got a B- in Driver’s Ed and a B+ in a history elective and still got into Yale unhooked. You should be fine - but make sure you indicate your medical circumstances in the additional information part of the common application

Don’t worry. I have a C+ and I am going to apply. Am I brave or what?

The fact that you had surgery and still got 3 A+s, 1 A and 1 B+ is extremely commendable. I wouldn’t lose a minute of sleep over it.

i find posts like these (of OP) rather self-aggrandizing. if taken for face value, makes me wonder how guys/gals like this actually get into schools like yale!

Thank you everyone who responded - especially to those who were able to look over the inherent obnoxiousness of my question!

I have a pretty severe form of OCD, so… high school isn’t exactly the best place for me at the moment! Also, being a teenage girl, bouts of random insecurity are practically a part of the job description!

When I wrote this, I was freaking out because my college counselor had just informed me that I could not be valedictorian or salutatorian due to that grade (not the end of the world), and that I would need to fill out an already-filled schedule with more “impressive” ECs. Also, he went through my list of perspective colleges, and told me I could forget them all. This was particularly frustrating, as all I could do was sit there while he yelled through the speaker phone…

Needless to say, I am not exactly his greatest fan, but he is the one writing my recommendation for my college applications, so I just wanted to have a somewhat substantial backing to show that my “failing grade” (his words, not mine) was not some gaping hole in my resum

Not worry about the Val or Sal. My son wasn’t either one but is attending Yale and the 3 ahead of him are only attending in state colleges, and in case anyone is wondering they did apply to a few Ivies.

I don’t know much about Yale but I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s amazing that you could get all those high grades after all the sickness you faced. Just to be safe, you could make sure that your GC mentions it in their recommendation

OP, if what you say about your college counselor is true, I would suggest reporting him to the principal or headmaster. As described, his statements sound ill informed (at best), and his behavior borders on the sadistic. Did you discuss these incidents with your parent(s) or with any other competent adult?
