I'm just curious to know if Yale and other Ivies see an 800 on the Math Level 2 as making up for a terrible 690 in SAT I Math, or are they completely unrelated?

they consider your scores in the best possible light.

And 690 is not terrible.

690 is not terrible. Its beneath the 25th percentile at Yale, but that means there ARE people who get in with 690 or less.

^But who are mostly athletes/URMs.

SAT 1 and SAT2 math are not the same thing. SAT1 Math is more a logic and concentration test, while SAT2 math measure what youve learn in your AP classes. That is why you might consistently obtain lower results in 1 while getting perfect score in 2. SAT1 has traps and other kind of questions to slow you down or destabilize you. It is made to measure how concentrated and prepared you can be; not how good in maths you actually are.

No, 690 is not terrible (its actually waaaaaaaaay above average ahah), but try retaking it or taking the ACT (if youre not a 2015).

In answer to the question in the subject line: Yes, to a certain extent it will.

My own interpretation of that combination of scores would be that the student tends to make careless mistakes on the test. This student probably has enough preparation in math to succeed at Yale, but is a bit error-prone, which could be a separate issue.

The key is that the two tests have different underlying scoring curves. If you make 4-5 careless mistakes on each exam, you are likely going to end up with 690 SAT1 and 800 SAT2.

Hahaha… I love how bad a 690 is to you… actually I don’t love it… it makes me want to cry.

^ Why does it make you want to cry?

I also exaggerated a little when I called it “terrible” but let’s just call it subpar…

^Haha, overachiever92, I’m in the exact same position as you so I know how you feel. :)

^^^ I got a 620 in math. It’s abysmal. Especially because of the huge margin between that and my cr and w scores. :(

To the original question, of course the SAT 1 is more important than SAT subject tests.
But I do think the 800 on the Math Level 2 will soften the blow…
If everything else in the application is good, you should be in the running.
