I'm a junior who really wants to go to Duke for Econ and PolSci. This summer I will be traveling to the UK and I'll have an internship with a prominent politician in Parliament (don't want to name names but he's the head of a prominent political party). I have a 33 ACT but my grades are slightly below Dukes average, but discounting freshman year they are about Dukes average. I'm involved in some things at school such as sports and two clubs, one of which I founded and am Pres.

But my question is will a unique internship make me stand out a bit in Dukes eyes, especially if I want to major in PolSci?

an internship is high school is quite a feat (and pretty impossible w/o luck and outside help). it will definitely stand out, and, along with your act score, you should have a good chance regardless of your grades.

this is not especially true. My HS had a poli sci class that some of the students who were not in the IB Diploma program (read: not the top students in the HS) took. The second semester of the class was an internship, and many of them interned on the Hill in DC.

Alright thanks guys. I think I have good enough grades (3.9ish cum with a subpar freshman year) but they are still a little below dukes average most likely (tough private prep school) but thanks for the info.

If anyone else has an opinion it would be welcome :)
