I have posted this thread before, but I still want some more opinions about my chances. Please feel free.
I 've just been living in America for precisely 1 year, since Dec 2003.I did not learn much English back in Vietnam.Due to a test I took when I first came,I was not put in ESL. But I dont think sheltered classes I took are much different.
I did not know well about the system, so I took 1 AP :Physics. And I got 5's in all three of the AP tests :Physics B, Physics C Mech, and Physics C E&M.
My SAT scores: SAT1 1st time:600V,740M oct 2004
2nd time:610V,800M dec 2004
SAT2 1st time:490W,800M2C,800Physics.
2nd time:610W.
I am wonderring if I should take SAT2 Chem in Jan 2005(I registered). Will a score of 780 help ?
My GPA is 4.1 weighted, maybe 3.9.. unweighted. But I took easy classes last year, and it is valued based on only 1 year.
I am taking 4 APs: Bio,Chem,GOvernment, Cal AB(I will take the BC test)
2 honor ones in English and history.
I dont have any extra-curri act,and joining an ethnic club in my school.
My recommendations are excellent, but I am not so sure about my essays(I do my app online, there are limits about space),guess just average.
I am applying to : 1 state school,my choice of safety.
3 universities of California: Berkeley,LA,DAvis.
5 private schools:HArvard,MIT,Caltech,Stanford,Cornell.
I apply for either engineering major or the astronomy one for each school.
What is my chance for the private school ?(if at all)

you may think im being harsh, but i think its the truth. of course, apply anyway.

thank you very much, anyone else ?please!

I don't know....the fact that you scored a 610 writing and 610 verbal after 1 year in America indicates you have strong potential....if this is shown elsewhere in your application, you stand a shot at HMCS...and others...

thank you towerpumpkin,
anyone has other predictions ?

u dont have any ec's??? thats the only reason u dont have a chance at harvard and ivyleague...

I'd agree with louischoi. That looks about right to me.

so what is the weakeast part in my application that makes those schools turn away from me? I need to know,I have a younger brother.

MIT - not impossible, but if you expressed your situation on your application, I would say you have a strong chance of getting in. Your non-english SATs are impressive.

You should also talk about the lack of ECs, point out that you've joined many EC activities back in your home country. They'll understand that socializing (right after you came to the US) with a brief amount of english communication wouldn't be so easy.

Same for Caltech.

I guess you still can send-in a supplement about your situation, and anyhow, Good Luck!!

Thank you h88, I have mentioned about my difficulties on the application, but I guess I was lacking a little aspiration.I should have applied by paper materials to have more space.

twitb:

Assuming you are a California resident,
