I'm making very low grades in my Ap classes but will getting 5's on the actual AP exams compensate for it? or will the 5's have no effect and colleges won't even look at my application because of the low gpa?

damn it, times like these i wish i worked harder

I know a guy who was failing Calc AB but got a 5 on the exam so the teacher went and changed it to a C. But that was on the teacher's descretion so it's not really an accepted thing.

I would imagine that the grades in the actual course will be looked upon with more scrutiny (why did "x" applicant do poorly in this course?). I believe almost all schools say they don't take AP scores into consideration, although I am sure the upper tier schools do as they verify grades. Perhaps your situation is likable to the "low GPA, high SAT" kind of kid. Take that it whatever way you will.

if you did manage to get a 5 in all your tests colleges would probably think that your classes were very hard if you were pulling bad grades (F,D,C) but still managed to get a perfect score on the ap test.

I disagree with DankStarbursts's assessment of the situation.

If I saw a low GPA and high AP score, I would be inclined to think that you weren't trying your best.

Although admittedly, if it were a one time thing, and you had other instances where your AP scores and AP grades more or less matched up, I probably would also chalk it up to a statistical anomaly.
