Most likely will have 3.3 uw and 3.46 w by end of junior year. My SAT is 1560, 600 math, 510 reading, 450 writing. My EC are Key Club 4 years, Track and Field 3 years, SADD 2 years, Library Volunteer, and worker at APPNA Physician Conference, and plan on volunteering at my dad's hospital sometime soon. I had 3.1 uw and 3.25 w freshman year so tried to get a upward trend going. These are my stats Also taking SAT Again in June. I wanna study pre med there. Dad also is doctor at 1 of Pitt's Medical hospital. Ethnicity asian. How would I fair if I applied early decision??? If I get in then I would 100% go to Pitt after I get in for early decision. How are my chances if I apply early decision?

Unless they changed policy, Pittsburgh does not have an early decision program. They have rolling admissions. They take applications as early as the summer until the class is filled. You are not obligated to attend once you receive your decision like most early decision schools. You are below the 25th percentile in math & critical reading and at the 25th% for math. The earlier you apply the better because as the class fills it becomes more competitive for remaining spots.

Right now your at the low end with GPA and scores, but people have gotten in. Kick butt on you finals, do some prep for the SAT and make sure you pick a safety just in case. Good luck.

Yield is around 30% so they accept around 12k people for a class of approx 3000. Yeah apply in the summer and send the SAT scores. Tell your counselor to send the transcript the first day your school opens. Who knows you might be the first person to apply to Pitt for the class of 2018…

Make sure you submit an essay, activities list, and teachers recommendations. These are optional, but will show your interest in Pitt and may make the difference. It’s a way to highlight who you are beyond your test scores and gpa.

As Amazhon said…early is key. Does your Dad have any peers that would be willing to write a letter of rec? I know most will say that demonstrated interest isn’t a factor but with scores that are on the low end of their spectrum I’d encourage you to pull out all the stops. We travelled quite a distance to visit Pitt and CMU…to make the most of the trip, my son reached out to the dean of the department that he was interested in, introduced himself and asked if any member of the faculty would be available to meet with him. He replied very quickly and set up a time for a meeting. When app time came, my son emailed him again…saying how excited he was to apply, blah, blah. Who knows if it helped…He did get in, but I won’t go as far as to say that’s why. But who knows.

You mention your pre-med interest but before marking it on your application, check to see what kind of grades you are getting in math and science. Are you getting As in Math/Science but not doing so well in English/History or are all of your grades B+/B and lower? If so, apply undeclared instead of as a pre-med track student. If you apply with pre-med or the sciences in mind, but your actual science/math background is weak, that is going to make Pitt very wary of accepting you.

Also- have you considered taking the ACT? You may do better on that than on the SAT.

I would also encourage you to visit the school, tour, talking to someone in admissions (or do an alumni interview in your town) and show your interest as heavily as possible (as the others have mentioned).

By the way, your dad being a doctor at a UPMC hospital has no weight on whether or not you will be accepted. The same goes for anyone with legacy- it’s not a factor in decisions.

When should I apply in the summer for Pitt??? I want to be one of the first people to apply there.

The application should become available some time in July I believe. However, even if you fill it out and send in your essays, keep in mind that most teachers will not send in LoRs until the fall and that your school cannot mail in your official transcript until at least the first day of your senior year. So you will not have a complete, ready to review, application until probably late August/early September (whenever your school starts up again).

Perhaps our situation is a little different but if your guidance dept. is open during the summer (they were open at both my sons’ high schools), they will send an official transcript out when you request it. Both sons applied in July and the transcripts sent in July. They did not send in any recommendations but submitted an essay with the application. Both were accepted with full tuition scholarships. Good luck!

MTnest - how long till you heard back?

I can’t recall exactly but it was in late September/October (pretty much once they started sending out acceptances). The scholarships arrived later around November or so. Older DS loved Pitt and has enjoyed his time there. Younger DS is heading to another school.

U guys actually think I have a chance though, with my stats I highly doubt I get in.

Have you taken the ACT? If not, do so since some do better on the ACT. Pitt will convert the ACT to SAT scores. They will also super score by combining the ACT and SAT scores.

For your SAT scores, I would suggest that you spend a lot of time on the SAT forum of this website. There are a lot of very valuable information and resources on the forum. In case, you decide to send your application in September, you can prepare for the October SAT during the summer. In my opinion, September is still “early” as most early decision applications (for schools without rolling admissions) are not due until late October or early to mid November.

I remember for this year going to campus in mid-July (since they waive your application fee if you fill out the app on campus), sending in my essay/transcript/LoR in the middle/end of august (like the first week back in school) and being accepted around the end of september. I received my guaranteed dental letter in the beginning of october but did not receive scholarship until Jan/Feb. I would definitely try to show as much interest as possible by visiting, sending supplements, and applying early. Also definitely give the ACT a try if you haven’t. I would make sure you have a safety that you are comfortable with or maybe consider one of the other pitt campuses (greensburg, johnstown) and then transfer to main after a year or two.
