Will bad recs kill you?

My recommendations were terrible, i am not going to lie. My teachers just dont care, and im sure thats how to they write all teh recs they encounter (most kids goto lower level schools anyway, few apply to ivies).

Will this seriously hurt my chances somewhat borderline chances?

That really sucks...That's just wrong...At my school teachers allow the top 10% to write their own letters describing their academic and extracurricular activities and they will proofread and make changes then submit. I wrote my own rec and saved it on disk. It was really glistening. I have been using it for all schools I applied to and I have not been rejected yet.

3.97

it depends where you are applying bsbllallstr8 - but the adcoms should realize the limitations of your highschool, and take this into account when reviewing your application, afterall, it's not your personal fault if the teachers cannot write well. it does reflect badly on you, however, if they have nothing positive to say. Bad writing is very different from negative writing...

good point, umm large public high school applying to ivies? lol i wish..

oh yea, and designated rural... my calculus teacher, who i received a 100from all year.. (i got the highest ap score are our school) didnt even mention my grades, mathematical intuitiveness (didnt really have to work hard at it), or my ap score! it was about a paragraph long talking about how i showed up and did my work on time. ASSSSSS! i was expecting a good rec from him!

my physics teacher wrote a decent one, cant complain about that one.. but the calc teacher really bummed me out! lazy ol' man

"large public high school applying to ivies? lol i wish.."

well then, what is the background of your school?

1600 students, designated rural, avg AP score for eveyrthing combined is under 2 lol... school is in a town, but outside of it there are large dairy farms and such. county has more cows than people.

hmm, well to reiterate what I said (and hopefully answer your question)

"it's not your personal fault if the teachers cannot write well. it does reflect badly on you, however, if they have nothing positive to say."

but it cant help...haha it could have been 50x better

they might take into account the school from which you come

yea i think they do.. but still, we arent hicks lol

bad reqs... well... they should have an enthusiastic tone.

recs wont kill u buddy...recs are overrated....they can improve ur image if ur borderline but good recs wont get u in...high school recs r stupid anyway...and no im not mad. I actually got good ones...dont worry...if ur essays r good and ur grades r good...the adcom will see that somethings not right...

i hope so...

so it's okay to have a teacher rec taht is incorrect in grammar and sentence structure becuase you have no control over that part. However, it is ok for a teacher to write a bad rec?

3.97 that's the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. It completely destroys the integrity of the recommendation process at your schools. You write your owns recs and have them proofread? I hope colleges learn of your school's fraudulent practices and if you submit that there is nothing wrong with what you do I challenge you to send a letter to all the schools you're applying to explaining how you wrote your own recs.

I think it's pretty smart.

I think that's a really stupid system too. It completely destroys the purpose and integrity of recommendation letters.

Don't you think that colleges are already aware of these kinds of practices? Its obvious that the integrity of both the recommendation letters and the essays is greatly compromised, just because there really is no way to control either.
