Will bad SAT Subject Tests kill my chances? Should I submit them?

I recently got my last two SAT Subject Tests back. So far, I’ve taken 5. US History, Physics, Math 2, and Literature, twice. I’ve done poorly on almost all of them. The only scores that I’m considering submitting are a 680 in Literature and a 720 in Physics. Aside from my subject tests, my application is strong. 35 ACT, 4.6 GPA, really good ECs. I’m applying to the Ivys and other top schools. Is it worth submitting a 680 and 720 to the colleges who recommend SAT II? Do colleges care more that you took them, or about the score? Will they kill my chances?

Thank you for your help.

Most colleges we have visited said to send subject test scores that are 700 and up.

What was your ACT Math subscore? Surprised your SAT2 Math 2 was not over 700. Might be worth retaking Math 2 or taking Math 1 if your earlier lower score was from silly mistakes/nervousness. Top schools that recommend SAT2’s expect to see them unless financial or school circumstances are a barrier to taking them.

Search for an article titled “SAT subject tests are NOT truly optional for middle/upper middle class applicants at elite colleges!”.

Ideally you take a couple again and improve. Not submitting them vs 680/720 is a bit of a toss up to me. Unfortunately, neither stacks up well against the competition at elite schools. It’s not as important as grades, course rigor, etc., but many will have top metrics in those areas also.

A little off topic, but can someone tell me how the Subject tests work on the day of the test? Senior son has taken the SAT but now needs a two to three (!) subject tests for college apps. Are they put in a separate room and then take the tests they need and leave? He will take two subject tests in October. This is new to me. Thanks in advance.

My D21 also has significantly lower Subject scores than the regular SAT scores or AP scores. She is not planning on taking any more and will not submit them anywhere. Any schools that “recommend/require” them she will likely not apply to (Georgetown.) I would not submit anything under 700, and to an elite school nothing under a 750. I really think all this testing and undue pressure all things College Board cause is ridiculous. If we were confident enough in the supposed “test optional” tracks of many schools we would forgo the SATs all together. Though I suspect “test optional” may not apply to unhooked students. (to Johnsonmama: yes there’s a separate space for Subject testers. They can take up to three exams during the allotted time-- I think there’s a quick break between exams and then students who are not taking three can depart.)

@techno13 thank you for the info… case in point, he is taking the subject tests for Georgetown. I feel like all I do is pay for tests, test answers and now subject tests : /

Thank you, very helpful info!
