Will being a legacy help with acceptance?

Hi, I’m looking at skidmore as one of my top choices, and I was wondering if being a legacy would give me a “one up” in the application process. My family doesn’t go generations back, but my father is a Skidmore alumnus. What are my chances of being accepted?

For reference, here’s my profile

  • 3.7 weighted GPA, 3.83 UW
  • 2 honors classes (we don’t have APs)
  • 31 on ACT, 11 on writing
  • 4 years varsity girls soccer
  • 2 years of publications (student art collective)
  • published author in award winning school magazine
  • 3 years volunteer with a nonprofit for underprivileged children in Los Angeles (United in Harmony)
  • 2 years of running my school club of said organization^
  • 4 years of creative writing
    -2 years of ceramics
-5 years of Spanish (Spanish literature level)

I’m not sure if legacy does a lot for acceptances at Skidmore but it will only help your chances. I was accepted this year and looking at your overview of stats an ED application may very well grant you an acceptance. Can never be sure though

What more important is if you need financial aid. If you don’t it can make a big difference at Skidmore.

Skid says, “All candidates are evaluated on the strength of their academic and personal qualifications, without regard to their financial circumstances.” (I.e., not ability to pay.) But there could be an issue with costs. Make sure to learn what your parents can afford and run the Net Price Calculator for each of your college targets. That’s on their web pages.

Yes, legacy will help.
But bear in mind you’ll still need to do well with your application. Your stats and some activities are just the start.

Can you look into playing soccer for skid? That could provide an admissions bump.

Good point Studious. To the soccer hook that you suggest, I would add that the OP give very serious consideration to applying ED. That could make a bigger difference than just about anything else, especially when it comes to candidates such as the OP, who have stats that are roughly equal to the overall Skidmore averages.

FYI, 49% of the class of 2021’s 665 students were accepted via the ED process. That’s a big number, and makes it very competitive for the remaining 51% of the class (about 340 students) to stand out in a field of more than 10,000 total applicants.

The OP would have an excellent chance at admission given the combination of her stats, being a legacy, having an athletic hook, and applying ED.

Your stats are good for Skidmore. I’d say you’re a lock and with the legacy it will only boost your admissions. You didn’t say if you are full pay - if you are, all the better.
