Will being a veteran increase my chances of getting into school?

I’m hoping to get accepted into Allegheny College in PA, but I was looking for some honest opinions of my chances, as I feel I may be delusional.

I didn’t do too well in High School due to unusual circumstances. My parents died while I was in middle school, and the subsequent custody battle among relatives resulted in me going to six different schools, in three different states, in five years. It had a negative effect on both my attitude and GPA. I joined the military right after graduation (2011, Florida) and really pulled myself together. (This is a summarized version of what I wrote in my application essay, for the record.)

Anyways, I applied to Allegheny with:

GPA: 2.5
SAT (math+reading): 1250
ACT: 28
And a recommendation from my Commanding Officer in place of a Guidance Councilor (I called admissions and received permission for this).

I don’t think my chances are exactly stellar, but I’m very drawn to this school. I understand that I’m banking on the school being convinced that my military experience has turned me around.

Realistically, what are my expectations here?

I just looked on naviance which shows the average act and sat scores and the average acceptant had a 26 on the act while the high have 29’s so you are good on test scores. I have no idea how your gpa and military experience will come into play though but good luck!

Your GPA is low, but your ACT is good. Your story and your veteran status will probably make it possible. You need a really good essay. Good luck.
