Will being the editor of a book/&published really help?? 'chance' me please..

Muchos gracias!

Sora-Did you mean to say that you wrote an essay that was included in a commercially published book (as oppposed to self-published on online)? If so, I’d say that’s a great EC as long as you can elaborate on the significance of this achievement within your application.

tokdoc: lol, is self-publishing actually publishing?
anyhow, yup, commercially published…
So I should talk about the book in one of my essays, definitely?

Only if it really means something to you. Your essays are a chance to show who you are as a person. If you’re more passionate about something else or you get a great essay idea about something else, don’t deliberately try and write about the book just because it’ll look good on the application. Either way, it’s going to be on the application. So only write the essay about it if you can say something in the essay that they’re not seeing anywhere else in your application :)

Sora-I would sure talk up that book. I think self-published books might actually carry some weight, though not nearly as much as a commercial deal. I often wonder if adcoms would spend the time to determine if a book were self-published. It’s not that easy to tell sometimes. But, in your case, I’d make a big deal about it if, as Portuguese said above, it’s very important to you. It is a pretty rare accomplishment.

to portugueseninja & tokdoc: thank you for the advice. i think i will use it, but maybe not as the focus of the essay, i think… ahwell, i’ve still got a few more months till the applications need to be sent in… thank you again!!

sora2712, for what it’s worth, you definitely have an excellent shot at those schools. I would also urge you to consider Dartmouth and other places like Williams, Amherst and UPenn because they have very good aid for internationals.
I am an Australian and I’m going to Dartmouth this Fall, not as a freshman, as a transfer (which is a whole different kettle of fish). From what I can tell about the application process as someone who has gone through it, you definitely have a solid shot at those schools.
Australian students who do really well have seriously decent chances at the best American universities. I know of people who have got into Harvard, Princeton, UPenn and Columbia so it’s DEFINITELY achievable.
With your ATAR (or whatever the new acronym is), I’d say for Yale you’ll need 99+.

If you want any help with stuff or want to know my stats etc, send me a PM.

Good luck
:)

whats the ATAR? Things have definitely changed since i left.

U know, back in the day… ;)

You have good chances, i know a guy from Melbourne who made Yale and no other school. So fit, is a HUGE thing. He was one of Haileybury College’s top students. The ENTER u should aim for is definitely over 99.5

I suggest looking at posts of students who just applied, and their results. Find some common patterns. Use these patterns to decipher what admissionpanelists are looking for in international students (esp from ur school). Then highlight those of your ECs that display these interests best.

also, claire might find this interesting.

meh, 2nds good enough

to sidfromaus: sorry for late reply, my internet was capped for awhile.
ATAR is the new UAI. *retch. enough said.
DEF. yearning for the ‘good old days’ of the UAI… sigh.
lol, i’d LOVE to make yale and no other other school…
but it looks like my ATAR and official HSC won’t be part of my application, unless i get deferred, because I’m applying SCEA…
but good advice, thank you heaps, i’ll try that.

Hey sora your school transcript should include an estimated ATAR for SCEA. And woah it’s interesting to see the competition for the Aussie pool since im from sydney tooo and applying for class of 2014. And my school is also currently ranked 2nd in the state in terms of HSC results - so it’d be quite freaky if we actually know each other… anyways good luck and write an awesome essay which I know you’ll do since you’re a published writer ;)

LOL, really? ahahha, that’s crazy. but its really good to have ‘fellow australians’ apply, you know? because applications to american uni’s arent really big around here…, dyuu mind me asking which school? you can pm your school, but if you dont want to say, dont worry about it~
problem is, i dont think my school does estimates… not like ruse, anyway, who get theirs in yr 11 ==;;
