I really really want Caltech. I'm on the waitlist. Any idea what the #s look like this year? I sent in a research paper I did as a pet project, hope it helps. Caltech is basically where all of structural and earthquake engineering started.

I’ve been thinking about the same thing too.
I really hope they accept a large pool of waitlisted applicants this year (me included!haha)

Has anyone been accepted off the waitlist yet?

Good luck guys. I was admitted three years ago today from the waitlist. It can happen for anyone :)

Still haven’t heard anything…

Anybody else hear?

Not yet. I’ve heard rumors that most potential waitlisted candidates are offered places during the first fortnight of the waitlist period (i.e. till 15th May). Is that, by any chance, true?

my hs counsel called caltech admissions about 2 weeks ago and they said theyre gonna start using wl around may 11th.

Thank God! I was gradually starting to lose hope.
I wake up every morning half expecting to see an email from my Caltech Admissions Officer.
The next few days are going to be tense (at least for me!)

I think everything has to trickle in from the May 1 deadline. I know my son didn’t accept until two days before or something, and I’m sure that some people don’t decide until actually May 1. It’s a very stressful time. Good luck to everyone.

3 more days to go until the 11th…

Its quite strange how inactive this waitlist thread is as compared to last year’s thread (which had a lot more paranoid people like me!)

haha. :)

and btw, the may 11 date is approximate and was said on april 20 (aka before they knew how many people would attend), so that date is assuming they use the WL at all. last year they took 15-20 people off the WL, but hopefully that number will be significantly higher this year…

Tomorrow’s the 11th and I am freaking out. I really hope they start making calls or at least let us know how many people they expect to take off the wait list.

Good luck to everyone and please post when and if you hear anything.

Yeah, if anyone gets in off the waitlist, do let us know. At least we’ll know they’ve started taking people in.
And I do hope they take in a lot more than 20 off the waitlist this year.

Btw, I sent an email to my admissions counselor yesterday asking him whether Caltech will be taking in any students from the waitlist. Waiting for his reply…

Anybody hear anything?

Still nothing on the website and no email update. The suspense is killing me :)

My admissions counsellor replied stating that Caltech still isn’t sure as to whether they will be taking students off the waitlist this year ( which probably implies they still haven’t finished sorting out the regular acceptances)

I guess we’ll have to wait a little longer.

I think it actually takes a while because if I remember right, you can just mail in your acceptance and have it postmarked by May 1. I know our mail takes about four days to land at Caltech. My son did email his acceptance as well but I’m not sure that it is required. Hope the waiting ends soon for everyone. I’m curious if more will get in off the waitlist due to the tough economy this year.

You guys have still haven’t heard? I was reading the Tech yesterday, and apparently 257 frosh matriculated, which is actually 8 or so more than we currently have room for. We apparently had a very good year in terms of yield and the overall success of prefrosh weekend in attracting students. I don’t know exactly what this means, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much if you’re on the waitlist…

Sorry :(

I didn’t think it was really beneficial to tell them that, especially since we don’t know how many students are going to cancel matriculation to jump over to another school’s waitlist.

Wow that’s really depressing.

How many students are typically lost to wait list acceptances at other schools? I guess my real question: will caltech use it’s wait list at all this year?

Yeah, I think Crazy Mom’s right. And it probably takes a lot more time for international acceptances to reach, but I guess almost all of the regular acceptances should reach Caltech by 15-18 May, after which they’ll decide whether or not to accept from the waitlist.

More waiting…sigh…

Crazy Mom, has your son been admitted to Caltech this year? (i.e. batch of 2013?)

My son is a frosh now, class of 2012. I just really feel for all of you high school seniors, last April was such a stressful time. In my son’s case, it was his most rigorous classload, time-consuming extra-curriculars, tons of scholarship applications, and trying to decide where to go to school, the whole dream school (Caltech) vs. very good public school giving a free ride decision. He was so relieved when he could finally answer the question everyone asks around graduation, “Where are you going to school?” I hope you guys hear pretty soon, one way or the other, as it is just such a relief when a decision is finally made.
