Will Chance Back! Chance Me for CMC, Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Columbia, Stanford, Cornell, UMich, Stern

I'm a rising senior and hoping to apply to CMC(ED), Barnard, Bryn Mawr, Columbia, Stanford, Stern, Cornell(My grandfather is a tenured professor here), and UMich this fall, so chance me and I'll chance back?

ACT: 35, superscored 36
GPA: 3.7something UW, 4.33 W, kinda low :/
National AP Scholar, NHS, 770+ on all my subject tests

ECs: My problem here was fitting all of them in the common app....
-Principal Trumpet(9-12) in 4 well known youth orchestras, high school band, all state band
-Lead Trumpet(9-12) in 2 well known youth jazz groups and school jazz band, regional awards
-Research Intern at UChicago for 2+ years, speaker at medical conferences and such there, hopefully a good rec letter
-Startup Nonprofit, made a couple thousand, organized a lobbyist campaign
-French Honor Society, VP, organized the major fundraisers which raised a couple thousand
-Captain of Gymnastics Team, HS and Club, MIP one year, MVP one year, founded the club optional team (I also coach and choreograph for the younger girls but this didn't fit)
-Volunteer at Humane Society and a few other animal shelters, marketing intern for the past year
-Marathon Runner, 2 2nd places, a 4th, and a top 10 finisher award
-President of Chemistry Club, organized a competitive chem league between nearby schools, increased membership by 50 members
-Intern Writer at Watching America, big news organization where I translate news articles into English
Things that didn't fit:
Internships and jobs!
Marketing Intern at the Shedd
Smaller marketing internships at yoga studios, bakeries, chiropractor
Law internship
Tutor at a Firm
Trumpet Teacher
Gymnastics Coach and Choreographer

Editor of HS Literary Magazine
Cocaptain of Speech Team
A lot of club memberships that I didn't do much for so I'm willing to leave those out

My issue with the 10 activity cap on the common app is that I've worked 30 hrs/week since the summer before soph year, as well as a few significant internships, such as marketing at the shedd, but my jobs don't fit on the activity list. I'll probably have my counselor write that, and I also had a significant family issue that impacted my grades 2nd semester soph and 1st semester jr year which is why my gpa is lower than I'd like...

Sorry for the rant, but basically, if anyone knows a way I can fit my internships on the common app and a few extra leadership positions, I'd really appreciate it! I might be using the additional info box that it gives you to explain my family circumstances, so that's ruled out...
Thanks!

Oh also I’m a bit ahead in math, finished college calc 4 through JHU my junior year, so colleges will get the transcript but I don’t plan to pursue math so I haven’t mentioned it on my application

what is your intended major, essay topic? If engineering, what are your marks in math and science courses? You don’t really show passion through your ECs, do you want to go into business? Be a writer? Yes you do have have a high ACT, but that may look suspicious due to your GPA, did you get tutored? If so, shows that privilege played a huge factor. I can’t say you have a high or low chance, and truly nobody can, people on CC only look at GPA and test score, and to a certain extent, ECs. We don’t know where you live, or how the area is, whereas adcoms do. I stopped making chance me threads, there not useful and one sight of a bad ACT score, and boom, no chance.

You sound solid to me, but a lot of the very elite schools are a crapshoot to get in. Your connection with Cornell seems like it would help quite a bit. Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1673856-chance-me-for-northwestern-university.html#latest</a></p>

You have a great act score and superscore! You may have too low of a gpa for Ivys though. Are you interested in a profession dealing with music? Medicine? Business? Something math related? Law? Your extracurriculars are scrambled. Focus on doing things that actually relate to your major and embellish them. I like the fact that you’ve interned at many places though! I’ll do the only ones that I know.
Stanford- reach
Columbia-reach
Cornell- low reach : you should ED here
UMich-'high match
Please chance me back- http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1672761-chance-me-for-stanford-university.html</a>
Good luck!

Stanford - Reach
Columbia - Reach
Cornell - Low Reach
UMich - Match
Barnard - Match

Thanks @manas1997, @contrametum‌, @Dream0n‌! No I didn’t get tutored for the ACT I’m actually an ACT tutor, I just had a family circumstance and stretched myself out too much and got a few really bad grades at the end of sophomore year, but I have an upward trend at least!

I’m not sure about what I want to major in but probably business, I might apply undecided but I’m not sure if that will hurt me

@LordTalos @contrametum , how can you give her a chance w/o knowing her intended major, especially for Cornell it matters.

@manas1997 It is just a rough prediction based on stats in general and etc. It will probably change once we know the OP’s intended major.

@LordTalos‌ @contrametum‌ eventually I want to go into IR, but I might apply as something else business/management related because I don’t have much to support it, except learning arabic and a law internship for immigrants

The GPA is probably your weakest link but your councilor should be able to explain the family issues which should nullify the problem. I have to say that is one of the most impressive EC resumes I have seen.
Top privates are really a shot in the dark but I would say you have a better chance than most.

I think you could easily get into Michigan, Barnard, and Stern. Having family at Cornell could also be very helpful. Your application will definitely not be thrown away by any of these universities. An explanation for the GPA is a must. Columbia and Stanford seem like reaches to me only because you are up against 4.0 UW with 35-36 ACTs. That being said, your EC list is fantastic! It also depends on what you want to do.

If you’re into business…
Stern has a fantastic program and is ranked #2 for finance behind Wharton.

Michigan Ross also has a fantastic business program as well. Of the colleges you listed, I believe these are the only two with actual undergrad business programs.

If you want music…

Again NYU has a fantastic music program and performing arts program as does Michigan.

@gryph0n @youngandtired‌ Thanks guys!

Claremont McKenna is my clear first choice and I’m pretty set on applying there early decision, but barnard and stern are tied for the next spot… Cornell seems like a good school but it’s very geared towards math and science which I’m not fond of, and it’s basically in the middle of nowhere. I’d like to be able to pursue internships/jobs during the school year, which is why a majority of my schools are near a large city, namely, LA and NYC

@vballgurl could you chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1672761-chance-me-for-stanford-university.html</a> thanks!

cornell, u mich, and barnell are matches. the rest are mid reaches i think. can u chance me back: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1673599-chance-me-to-cooper-union-engineering.html#latest</a></p>

@toesockshoe‌ Sorry I don’t know anything about that college so my chance back won’t help…

@vballgurl‌ can u write that on my thread. i want it to be on the top of the list. sorry im being a bit picky, but no one is replying. just say “i dont know about the college on my thread”. here is the link http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1673599-chance-me-to-cooper-union-engineering.html#latest</a></p>

thanks in advance

You have a great chance at all those schools. Your ECs are great but they are a bit ambiguous i.e. they do not show sort of a passion for something. Make sure you write great essays and you will get into most of your colleges.

Thanks for chancing me btw.

Best of luck!

I wouldn’t classify the OP’s ECs as “impressive”. They are too all over the place. She does some medical conference, followed by a marathon, and so on. As the OP said, she doesn’t have ECs related to IR, except for the internship, even for other colleges she doesn’t seem to have a certain concentration. IMO, clearly shows she tried to make a laundry list of ECs.

Your GPA is a little bit low, but it may be due to your school. You should not worry too much about it if your class rank is good (e.g. within 10% for top schools).
For listing EC in the 10 slots on Common App, you need to first sort out the activities and put the most important ones up front. Second, you may combine similar activities to one item. Third, use the additional information space if necessary.
