Will chance back

Chance me? and I promise to return the favor
I used to want to go to Brown for a REALLY long time, but after spending the summer there I realized it is definitely definitely not my dream school.

Gender: F
Location: NY
College Class Year: 2014
High School: Public
High School Type: sends many grads to top schools
URM: Hispanic

Academics:

GPA - Unweighted: 3.7/3.8 ish (I had mono this year and missed over a third of the class days... something like 13 weeks. My GPA from freshman and sophomore year was a 3.96)
GPA - Weighted: 4.70
Class Rank: top 10%
Class Size: 600

APs:
AP Lit (I accelerated English and took this as a junior, something not done in my high school.)-5
AP Chem-5
AP US-5
I've taken the hardest schedule possible all of high school and have never taken anything but honors courses.

Senior schedule
AP Bio
AP Spanish
AP Human Geo
AP Econ (by correspondence, not offered at my school)
AP Calc AB (i took BC this year)
I am also taking English and Creative Writing at the local Ivy league university (it's not Brown; I wish)

Scores:

SAT I Math: 710
SAT I Critical Reading: 730
SAT I Writing: 800
(definitely definitely retaking)

SAT II Literature: 800
SAT II Chemistry: 800

Extracurriculars:

Significant Extracurriculars:
-Co-founder and president a women's organization at my school that serves two purposes:
1. Increases awareness about issues regarding women in general: we bring in lecturers; hold free self-defense courses; have a pamphlet stand in our school library; have discussions about movies, books and articles; go see speakers, exhibits, plays, etc.; go present at middle schools in my town about important issues; and the like
2. Raises money for a hospital that provides care to women in the Congo who have experienced sexual violence. I feel really, really strongly about this and plan on doing an independent major that has a heavy focus in the Africana studies department. I also wrote one essay on this but I don't know if it's the one I'm going to submit for the common app.

-Sole founder and editor in chief of my school's literary and arts magazine. I have been doing creative writing on my own since I was tiny and I realized there was no outlet for students to do creative writing at my school... So I just created one! It's legit though, we have a publisher and an entire staff that includes 6 editors and then those working under them.

-I run a mentorship program for middle school girls through the women's community building in my town. This is a well known program that used to be organized solely by adults but after being a mentor for one year I told the leaders that I really wanted to help plan. I ended up instructing all the mentors (like 40-50 girls) and doing a lot of other planning things that used to be adult work.

I'm also the Student Representative to the Board of Education in my town... pretty self-explanatory. I spoke often in meetings and even gave a presentation to the board and town. Some of my suggestions for budget cuts were actually included in the budget.

I'm really involved with the freshman orientation program at my high school (which is a really big thing there); I was in charge of one of the major events and also was in charge of many subcommittees for events throughout the year.

-I am a member of a select committee of students that helps plan a memorial lecture series that's been going on for the last 26 years at my high school. This requires us to call professors and important community members and do a lot of convincing, badgering, nagging, among other annoying but effective behaviors to get them to come say to high schoolers what they would normally say to lecture halls full of notable adults or at least Ivy leaguers.

-Spent the summer after 10th grade working for an NGO that helps those who are HIV positive. This wasn't through some kind of program, I lived in my grandparents' home country with them and volunteered on my own with a group that doesn't normally hire teenagers.

Athletic Status
Ski Racing. Since I was 7, have qualified for states almost every year. 4th at states this year (in a very competitive state with many ski academies)

Varsity Crew (since summer after freshman year) my boat won states this year... I get up at 5 every morning to go row for 2 hours... I love rowing?

Honors and Awards: scholar athlete awards (for skiing)
national merit something
local community service awards
won a county-wide leadership award
Rotary Youth Leadership Award
I'm lacking here a lot

College Summer programs: Brown University summer college for the creative writing program. Absolutely loved it; my professor was amazing and she is writing me a college rec.

Major: Double major in creative writing and international relations.

Great stats and ECs… and if you retake the SAT and score higher you have a really great shot at all these schools. URM status will help also.

McGill - the one here in canada? yay go canada! anywazz um ya, this is my safety school, each year i see lots of idiots with half decent grades, about 1/50 of what you have to get it so ya…to sum up, your in lol

hopkins’ writing is one of the best in the country as is its international relations program.
I also really appreciate that even though I am majoring in the humanities, hopkins would require that I take math and science courses. although my grades in math are substantially lower than all my others, I always took the highest levels offered at my school and enjoyed learning a subject that does not come naturally. I worry that if I go somewhere without these kinds of requirements, I won’t have the opportunity to take math or science, which I want to continue studying even if I don’t make my profession in those fields.

lol, the local Ivy League. Ive never even seen an Ivy League school. anyways, im pretty sure i have chanced you before, have you ever made a chance thread before, like a month ago? very nice profile, btw. i dont see a definite need to retake your SATs.

sighh… i completely agree with solittletime… TOT
what is it with super-students???
lol, in a good way, that is.
only thing that’s really going to set you back is the SAT score, I think, just the SAT Reasoning. But looking at your other scores in general, I think it’ll be a cinch for you when you retake it anyway?
Get above 2300, and you’ll be in with just as good a chance as everyone else applying…
I would do individual match-recommendation for you, only I don’t know all of the colleges you listed all too well… Goodluck anyway~

Super Student :O.
I’m not familiar with a lot of these schools, but I’d say you have a good chance at any Ivy League or otherwise out there :)

You have amazing stats. Even your SAT score are definitely in the range of most schools on your list.]
Johns Hopkins-Applying Early-don’t know
Brown-reach/good chance if SAT scores are slightly higher
Columbia-same as Brown
UChicago-don’t know (I think UChicago cares lots about essays and letters of recs though).
Northwestern-match
UC Berkeley-match
Pomona-match
Claremont-McKenna-match/low reach (CMC tends to deny very qualified students sometimes) Write killer essays and you should be good though.
Williams-I think low reach
Bowdoin-don’t know
Tufts-match/very low reach
Reed-match
NYU-match
Whitman-definitely in
UCLA-definitely in
Cornell-low, low reach

thanks in advance! ^

With a slightly higher SAT, I could certainly see you getting into just about all of these schools! A word of warning, however: Berkeley is notoriously difficult for OOS applicants, so it may be difficult than the average SATs and GPAs reveal.

Some of the above in/safety answers are nonsense, especially when coming from other HS students. I would ignore all of them, and consider the schools matches, at best.

You have a great shot at all of those schools. Among the more difficult for you would be the Ivies you listed and UC Berkely(out of state, I assume), but you’re still outstanding in every field. Try to narrow it down a bit, you don’t need to apply to that many schools, since you can get in to most.

Good luck!!!

Wow your profile is very solid. For the top schools that you want to get into such as Columbia and Brown I think it’s just up to fate!

Fabulous ECs, grades and scores. Don’t worry about retaking the SAT. It’s not as important as people on CC make it out to be. I’d say you’re in at most and are definitely qualified for the top schools on your list, but it’s never a definite yes. Good luck.

Johns Hopkins-Applying Early - high match
Brown - reach/low reach
Columbia - reach for all
UChicago - ?
Northwestern - low reach
UC Berkeley
Pomona
Claremont-McKenna
Williams - low reach
Bowdoin - low reach
Tufts - high match

Cornell - low reach
McGill

Johns Hopkins- Id say youll probably get in so the rest of the chancing is pointless haha
Brown - match
Columbia - match
UChicago - match but it depends on essays
Northwestern - match
UC Berkeley - high match/reach (because of OOS)
Pomona - match
Claremont-McKenna - low match
Williams - high match
Bowdoin - match
Tufts - match
Reed - match
NYU - low match
Whitman - idk
UCLA - match
Cornell - match
McGill - idk

Wow, incredibly solid resume. Best of luck to you. Some near the top are slight reaches for everyone so I’d say don’t get too confident. But you look good on the vast majority. I’ve heard great things about Whitman. And from personal experience the environment at Tufts and Claremont McKenna was very good. Just a few of my thoughts.

Chance me when you get a chance: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/709285-am-i-track-ivy-stanford-etc.html

in all honesty, i think you’re good for most of the schools. the only ones you might have trouble getting into are brown, columbia, and williams and the reasons are self-explanatory.
