I’m trying to decide between playing IM basketball or club basketball. I played basketball all through high school, and was the captain for one year, so I’m pretty sure that I’ll be able to make it onto the club team.
My question is, will club basketball be too much of a time commitment, since I’ll also be balancing clubs, volunteering, and most of all, college courses themselves.
It would really help if anyone who has experience as a pre-med club sports player could give me some insight.
I think it depends on the school, as well as the practice and game schedules…how many hours/week and how much travel (for club) are involved. FWIW, a UPenn tour guide over spring break said he quit club basketball during freshman year because it was too demanding.
One of my close friends was on the Harvard Quidditch team, and he said that it wasn’t too difficult for him, but I just wanted to get some insight on the more traditional sports.
Thanks
Being a varsity athlete is definitely a plus. I think being club in a sport with no varsity is less of a plus but still a plus. Being club in a sport that has varsity…probably not worth it. Assuming your school is like Brown, there are divisions within IM that correspond to different skill levels. I imagine the top tier IM basketball teams at pretty much any school will provide you with enough competition to satiate you. At Brown those teams were frequently varsity athletes in other sports (e.g. teams of football or baseball players) who played high school varsity basketball.
It’s good? It’s an example of a club sport without a varsity. It has a lot of high school lax and football players who weren’t good enough to play D1 in college. I knew a few people on the team but I also graduated 10 years ago.
