Will college take my GPA over my letter grades? PLEASE ANSWER! :)

GPA: 3.88
Class Rank: Top 10%
SAT:
Math: 580
CR: 600
Writing: 620

I want to go to James Madison University and I'm in their range for my GPA and my SAT scores and I have great EC's and over 100 hours of community service...

But out of my 28 high school credits, I got A/B's in 24 of them.

I'm in all Honors and AP classes. I got in over my head junior year and my end of the year grades showed it although oddly enough my quarter/ semester grades were good. (I bet you're wondering how this is possible- final exams killed me)

But it's my senior year and I have straight A's and I'm taking 4 AP courses and 3 Honors courses.

So will the colleges see that out of my high school career thus far I have mostly A's and B's in really advanced courses? And they'll see my good GPA and my SAT scores and my EC's and still consider accepting me?

I wouldn't dare to ask but I had a friend who applied to JMU with a way lower GPA then me and less A's and B's and she got on the waitlist at least.

Oh my intended major is Writing and Rhetoric in case that matters.

Unless your 3.88 is weighted, you really don’t need to worry. Calm down, you’ll be fine. If you can retake the SAT or ACT, though, and bump your score up a few points, that’ll put you in the upper range of their accepted students and make you more of a shoo-in.

yay  thanks! i hope you’re right!

I don’t think they will “take your GPA over your letter grades” but they will see that you’re in the top 10% of your class and that’s gotta say something.

well I feel like GPA is the most important thing. Besides I have 85% good grades. I’m sure they can overlook a few C pluses (1/2 a point to a B) in a few difficult advanced math courses especially since it’s not my major…I have other good assets. Like my SAT scores and my EC’s and my courseload and my recommendation and my community service and my awards and I took a whole year’s worth more credits in math and spanish than necessary. I feel like to overlook all of that because of a few unfortunate letter grades especially since I have all A’s at the time I’m applying and they’ll see my senior transcript, would be almost stupid. I’m not going to bring down their averages or anything. So…

The important thing is the rigor of your courses. They will know and look and consider your efforts. Get that SAT score up! good luck!!
