I'm not a native eng speaker and i came to this country when i was a freshman...(I came from China). If i get a low CR score (between 600 and 650,keep scoring 610,630 on practice tests),do you think the following colleges will excuse my low CR scores?
Cornell,JHU,NYU,UVA,etc.......

It depends on what your other scores are. If you have stellar math, science and another foreign language scores, they might overlook your CR. Have you taken the ACT? It rewards those good in math and science, and the language and reading questions seem to be more direct and less subtle and tricky. Good luck.

It takes about seven years of study to master Academic English, so it is no surprise that your CR scores aren’t what you’d like them to be. Take the TOEFL. Your score on that is very important since you have fewer than five years in English language schools. When you do get to college next fall, see if the ESL program has any specialized reading and writing courses for advanced English learners like you.

The kind of colleges you’re considering aren’t likely to excuse your low CR score because they get plenty of applications from stellar internationals with high CR scores.

Your CR score would be fine for most colleges in the U.S., just not for the most competitive colleges – the type of college that you’re planning to apply to.

Of course, don’t let this discourage you from applying. If you don’t apply, you’ll have no chance of acceptance.

I think those schools get lots of applicants directly from China with high CR scores.

I agree with happymom. Ask your GC to see if you can take TOEFL instead and also try the ACT.

A CR score of 600-650 is higher than most students --including native English speakers – get on the SAT, and the OP’s skills would all the OP to be academically successful in probably all colleges in this country. The scores, though, probably are not high enough for the OP to be admitted to the very top colleges since there are plenty of non native English speaking applicants whose scores are higher. If the OP got accepted to such a college, however, the OP would have the English skills to pass courses there.

Are you applying as an international student? Or do you have a green card already?

^i have a green card already.

two words: try harder

Take the TOEFL - Many schools require it of international applicants. I don’t know why they’d bother asking for the TOEFL if they were still going to consider the SAT CR more heavily. I just find it hard to believe that a lower range (but still quite acceptable) SAT CR from a non-native speaker would be such an application killer as people here are suggesting it might be.
