Here's my problem: my main EC for my high school career was the skateboarding club I started. I devote anywhere from 10-15 hours a week to it, and it has done some great stuff like organizing skateboarding competitions and spearheading anti-smoking campaigns at my HS. However, my guidance counselor seems to think the club will generate a negative image when adcoms read my app, ie they'll think I'm some ruffian or something like that. I thought it was a great EC because it's something I truly enjoy and I don't really think that many people applying to HYP have founded extreme sports clubs. Is my GC a moron or do these schools want quirky ECs within a boundry?

I'd go for it!

I agree with gxing!

i agree as well. i think that colleges want all kinds of people with different interests. i'd say go for it, especially if you write an essay about it/why you started it/how it's helped you grow as a person yadda yadda yadda.
good luck!!

Hey, I'm impressed. ;] I don't see why it would be looked down upon...the way I see it is, you love something and you went with it. Nothing wrong with that.

Sometimes, these counselors **** me off. I tell my counselor that I think UCSD is a pretty good school and basically tells me no...and on top of that, she recommends me to go to schools that I think are below what I'm capable of...

As for your skateboarding, I think it's a great idea. You've taken something you like and you went further and used it to better your community (the anti-smoke). Everyone has hobbies and I guess this is one of your strong points. Isn't that what colleges want to see? Good luck!!

i think this is actually unique and interesting, since i've never heard of a skateboarding club and anti-smoking campaigns... go for it. =)

Darn, i wish i had ever learned to kickflip.. or at least ollie half a feet.

^^ Haha thanks guys. I'm not listening to GC anymore.

That is a very great EC. Your campaign against smoking should remove all negative connotation from "Skateboarding club"
