I'm thinking of taking the SAT Subject Test for Math Level 1. Although I am good at math and score well on my SAT, I still fear I may do bad on the subject test since it is more in depth. Just wondering if I were to take it, and not do well, can colleges see it even if I don't mention I took it/ don't send my score in? None of the colleges I am looking into require a subject test but I still want to take it to help me stand out. If I don't do as well as I would have liked, I don't want colleges to see I even took it.

Nope, not unless you choose to. But make sure you know which ones you’re sending, I know that I sent some accidentally!

That’s not what a college coach and an admissions officer at a college fair told us. They both said that admin officers have access to every College Board score (I don’t know about ACTs). Whether they choose to look up the ones you don’t send is probably doubtful. But, we were told that they are available to view.

@Leyland: Can you provide a source to support your claim?

They do not have access to your scores. That is an evasion of privacy. They can only see what you chose to send them.

Look, I agree with you, it seems like an invasion of privacy, but this is just what I was told. And, no, I’m not publishing the names of the two individuals who told us this. The admissions officer who came to our HS for a parent meeting told us that they have access to the College Board database and they can (if they choose to) look up scores that are reported and not reported (but most won’t spend the time to do so, he said). I’d be very happy if you tell me that they can never see the scores from sophomore year that were embarrassing.

@Leyland: I didn’t ask for their names, but if what they say is true surely the information can be found somewhere on College Board’s website.
