I've seen a few previous threads that imply that colleges don't take AP Environmental Science seriously, because the class is generally considered easy. Next year, my junior year, I'm taking the hardest possible classes in each subject and doubling up on science (i.e. taking Honors Chem. and AP Environmental). The following year I plan of taking AP Chem and Honors Physics, since my school requires at least one previous year of the subject in order to take the AP level. I'm seriously considering a career in Environmental Toxicology, or something along those lines. If colleges know that I'm serious about the class, will they take me seriously?

“I’m worried colleges won’t take me seriously if I take an AP class.”

I guess I’ve seen stranger things on this website, but still…are you serious?

At my school AP Enviromental is easy, but I know at some schools it’s hard (someone on here said it was hard at their school…)

Yeah, at my school it isn’t a cakewalk. Several people get Bs in the class, but most students do very well on the AP exam. I agree with heather, it’s an AP class, why wouldn’t they take it seriously?

No, they won’t take you seriously if you take an AP class.

APES is known for being easy at a number of schools. At my school that class is crazy intense. Assignments here. Labs there. Tests overlapping material. I’m surprised I passed that exam.

Alright, thanks! And I know that at my school it is a complete joke, depending on the teacher. My biology teacher this year suggested that I don’t take it because I’m looking into very reputable colleges (not quite Ivy League, but “2nd Tier”) and she said that she personally would rather see a student take a more difficult AP class, like Stats or Biology, than APES.

Well, what would your alternative be? Environmental science is not the toughest AP science, but do you really think that adding an AP course to your transcript will make your application look worse? Go for it…

Really? It is an AP class. It is very difficult at our school. It is viewed as good regardless.

better than honors i always say :)

YOU MUST BE JOKING.

AP Classes are all meant to be taught at a difficult level. There is no Easy or Hard AP Classes, this ‘Easy, Hard’ thing is made up by an individual student.
APES Is considered one of the hardest AP’s, Colleges WOULD OF COURSE TAKE YOU SERIOUSLY. I mean you have to be kidding me, if your posting such a stupid post like this.

I Hope your kidding about this.

Woah, Peter, cool your tots.

You’re right that colleges would definitely take APES seriously, but come on.

Only on CC… only on CC…

APES got my daughter out of the hard chemistry requirement at her school :)!

I feel that APES is one of the “lesser” AP’s. Right down there with human geography.

My brother took it his Junior year and at our school it is considered a joke class. I agree with eoaynn, it is considered one of the “lesser” APs. When my brother went to his college interview the following year, the class wasn’t exactly looked down upon, but he was told that it would have been more beneficial if he would have take AP Bio, Chem, etc. (Something a bit more challenging) But it seems as if you are doing it for the right reasons, if that’s your interest. Good luck! And Peter, it’s not a big deal. He/She is just curious.

Yeah, it’s not only on CC. My school considers AP Environmental and Human Geo to be joke classes (for AP classes). Which is to say that they’re considered to be about as difficult as the average honors course.

Basically all AP classes are still considered highly by colleges no matter what, IMO

I know a senior who took AP Environmental Science instead of taking AP Physics C or taking Physics with Calculus at a local college with dual enrollment. He was one of the few kids in our school to get accepted in to Harvard EA. Granted, there were other factors in his admission process, and this was his senior year. He took lots of AP classes, but his senior year he took some of the “easier” ones (AP Statistics, AP Environmental Science), but still got in early action to one of the most prestigious universities in the country.
