Hi, I was wondering if someone didn't take any AP or Honors classes during 9th through 11th grade (great grades, just not AP or H) and took several of them during 12th grade, would colleges take those classes and grades into consideration when you apply? I know they want to see them after you've been accepted but would they know you were taking several AP and Honors classes your senior year before they accept/reject you?

They will know what classes you are taking in your senior year. You’ll tell them on the Common App.

Unless you are admitted ED/EA, you will probably have to submit a Mid-Year Report. On this form, your high school reports your first-semester grades in your senior-year classes.

So, yes, they’ll know. The question is, what will they make of it? I don’t really know, but I can hazard a guess based on what I’d be inclined to do if I were an admissions officer. I’d be disinclined to admit you early, unless you were already highly qualified for the class based on your grades in standard classes. If I were an admissions officer at a college where most successful applicants have been taking honors or AP classes, I would want to wait and see how your first-semester grades were. So, if you were applying early, I’d probably defer you. If you were applying regular decision, I would be very interested in seeing how you did in those senior-year classes before I made a decision.

It depends on the college, for example, Penn considers Rigor course selection very important. Someone on CC wrote Penn accepted her over other students that did not take any Honors or AP from 9-11 grades.
