Will colleges take this into consideration?

In my freshman year of high school i did okay, got all B's and two A's.
In my sophomore year i got all A's and 2 B's.
On Christmas Eve of my junior year in high school my dad died :( so I had a crappy school year and ended up getting no A's, mostly B's & C's and I even failed a class :S

My father's death really affected my academic performance for that year and I was just wondering if colleges would take that into consideration when evaluating my transcript.

The common app has an “additional information” space where you could explain, or the essay section. Whether or not colleges take the extra information into consideration probably depends: large state school with admission based more on GPA/SAT vs. smaller private school. Good luck!
