Just a quick question, but will it hurt me to use the common app rather than the JHU app? thanks

Write the supplement essays along with the common app ones.

This has been discussed often and answered by Admissions Daniel. You can search this forum for his answers. (I wouldn't recommend asking him again; his good nature gets sorely tested when folks don't try searching before asking a question ;) ).

Use the application form that showcases you best. My S was admitted using the common app because it worked best for him. He answered the JHU supplement essay qx, and Admissions Daniel has strongly recommended that you do that. You don't have to, though.

As jmmom has said, we have discussed this issue many times before so I will give you the short answers (search for the longer ones):

We have absolutely no preference as to which type of application you use - JHU or Common, online or paper. Choose your favorite, they all look the same to us.

If you choose Common, then you should seriously consider submitting the JHU essays as part of the JHU supplement.

Cheers!

is it alright to use the common app teacher recommendation form even if I'm using the JHU online app?

do you know if most schools like JHU (which accept the common app and have their own online form) would accept the common app teacher recommendation in the same situation?

Yes, you may mix and match common app. rec. forms and the JHU application.

As far as other schools, unfortunately I do not know if this is the same situation -- you will have to ask each school.

How about counsellor recommendation/school report? Can I mix and match these common app forms with the JHU application?

thanks a bunch

Yes you can mix the school report forms too.

The only time you can not mix is for the main parts of the application. If you apply via a JHU application then you must submit Part I and Part II of the JHU app. If you apply with the Common Application then you must submit the Common App. and JHU Supplement. You can not apply with Part I of the JHU and the Common App. supplement, or any other mixed combination.
