Will COVID-19 Make Admissions Less Meritocratic? One Expert Says Yes. What Do You Think?

“Because of the pandemic, when college applications arrive at the nation’s universities this fall they will be missing many of the traditional signals that admissions officers use to distinguish students — including standardized-test scores, letter grades and extracurricular activities. That means this year’s admissions system is likely to be even less meritocratic than usual…one thing that surprised me during the year I spent inside the selection process at three top-ranked institutions, to research a book, was how often admissions officers were evaluating high schools as much as they were students. It’s that tendency that is going to make life more difficult this year for bright students from high schools without a track record of sending lots of people to competitive colleges.”

Thoughts?

Presumably this supports the comment I have read several times recently that many feel kids from “well known” high schools stand to have a bit more success this year.

It’s behind a paywall, but isn’t that the gentleman who answered questions about admissions here? If so, he seemed to know what he was talking about, so I assume the same here.
