Hi am a sophomore in a high school in Texas. I am currently ranked 44/716 which is the top 6%. My school has a block schedule if you are familiar with that. I took the mistake of taking Spanish 4 AP. I did well in Spanish 3 PAP and I thought I had a chance to do well in Spanish 4. I was terribly wrong. The class is insane! Every night I study for at least 3hours just for that one class and I still end up doing bad on the quizzes. My average right now is an 81 and is dropping fast.I realize now that Spanish is not the language for me. Unfortunately the counselor told me that I could not drop out until the 9 weeks are up. So i will basically be getting credit for half the course. Now my goal is to either go to Rice University, Emory, UT Austin, Baylor, etc. Will dropping out of this course look bad on my transcript? I have a feeling Spanish will destroy my class rank so I don't exactly want to stay in it. What do you guys think?

can anyone help please?

still need some help guys

In my opinion, you are a sophomore. Calm down. Take another language course when you are an upper classmen do well in it. Do better in your other classes to make up for the small issue that was your Spanish class. You are about to leave it soon anyway. The value of each grade becomes less and less with each grade you get for your GPA. So it will not hurt you way toooo much.
It will not hurt your chances. Just figure out the language requirnment for the schools you want to attend and get it done. You can do it.
Good luck with your spanish class. I have been tking latin for years and I can feel your pain.

^ I basically had to only go up to Spanish 3 but i guess for my ego i decided to take Spanish 4. And do you think i should drop out of the class half way through the semester? I mainly don’t want colleges to think I am a quitter for doing so.

You should try your best to complete the course. If you are unable, then that’s fine. however, I would try and meet with the teacher and work out a study plan or something. Frequently teachers will bend over backwards to help students that they feel are trying, and I have little doubt that your teacher would work with you to bring up your grade if you’re putting in that much effort in the course.

However, if you drop the course half-way through the semester, it will most likely be marked on your transcript as an incomplete, which may be an issue. Therefore, it may be better to take the B- and run than to drop it and get it marked incomplete, which generally implies that you would have failed the course had it been completed at all.

^ that sound bad. I guess I should stay in the course even if it will lower my class rank.

At 6%, your class rank can fall to 10% without any noticeable loss in prestige. Also, they will respect that you’ve taken something out of your comfort zone. Just try to work with the teacher to ameliorate the grade as much as possible.
