Will dropping this course affect my chances for Ivy.

I am currently attending The Lawrenceville High School which is the third best prep school in the nation. Unfortunately, I have been placed in French 2 (goes up to French 3 then AP's) which is too high for me. My teacher wants me to got to french one but, I am afraid it will hurt my chances at the ivies since it goes on my transcript as a dropped class. Also, I am an indian so it makes it harder since so many indians apply to the ivies. My grade is a B- in french this trimester but, all my other grades are A+'s and I am taking rigorous courses for this year and the next 3 years. In fact, I am currently taking Precalculus BC as a freshman (9th grade). I think I can get a tutor and get A's for the rest of the year but, I don't think my teacher thinks I am capable. But, I have struggled with other subjects before and did well and I will work extra hard to overcome French 2. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

I would suggest staying in the class, even though it will take a little more effort;however, if you really feel incapable of taking the class then I guess you should drop it. Sure a dropped class might be a blemish on your transcript, but it’s much better than a failed class (granted that you’re not failing, but you get the point). It’s up to you, I guess.

i know tons of kids who have gotten 3.5’s at lawrenceville and got into ivies… if all your grades are A+'s your way above the average… and might even be competing for val

Good point. Keep those grades up for the next three years and you will have great stats for admission. Granted there are other factors considered in the admission process, but the academic portion of your application should be good. Lawrenceville should add a lot to your application as well, especially if you are an exceptional student there.

You’re a freshman. Please, stop worrying about college right now. I know it seems tempting, but do NOT make any decisions, academic or otherwise, based on what you think Ivies want, especially since you’re still a three years away from applying!
