I really would love to apply for the whitman/newhouse dual enrollment program so I can do marketing and public relations. However, I am concerned it will hurt my chances of being admitted because:

a) my math SAT score was only a 610. I'm not the best at math, but I have recieved all A's in my math courses( i'll be taking ap calc this fall)

and

b) Newhouse is extremely competitive to get into.

Newhouse public relations would be my first choice to begin with, but i would be interested in adding a second major down the road regaurdless.

rest of your stats and EC’s please when you get the chance?..

just so you know, if you apply and are accepted “dual”, Whitman becomes your “home school” for advising and such, not Newhouse…not sure if that matters to you or not, but for some, it made the decision you are trying to make…

My D, a current Whitman/Newhouse dual sophomore, agonized over this very point. Would it hurt her chances to apply to the dual? Her admissions interviewer encouraged her strongly to apply and stated that there wouldn’t be any negatives to it since she could put two other choices down as well.
She loves her program but, as rodney states, the dual degree is very restricting. She has to satisfy the Whitman core which is very extensive (Whitman students only take 3 courses for their major- the rest are all of their required core courses which basically includes introductory courses in all majors). On the other hand she only has to take 8 courses in Newhouse for her degree there which are primarily in her major, advertising. Other majors have other numbers of required courses. In order to satisfy the dual degree, you have to take an additional 8 to 10 courses over and above the 5 courses required each semester. These are all liberal art requirements and some may be satisfied by AP credit. You can take up to 18 credits per semester so some of them can be satisfied this way or through intersession or summer courses. She would have liked to double major in either Whitman or Newhouse but this is totally out of the question with this program.

Thank you for your insight Twoparent, that was really helpful. Public relations is my primary interest, so I might just apply to Newhouse and see if 'Cuse offers any business minors.

Thanks for the info rodney about the Newhouse double major. In Whitman, almost every student double majors within the business school because each major only requires three or four courses. My daughter’s faculty advisor (who was a Newhouse-Whitman double himself many years ago) keeps trying to get her to do this. Like many communication schools, Newhouse wants their students to have a wide breadth of knowledge about many different subjects. Business schools are more myopic.

im going to be a freshman at SU (in 2 weeks!!!). im dual majoring in broadcast journalism and finance (whitman and newhouse). i applied just to newhouse originally bc i had the same concerns you had. after i was accepted into newhouse i called up admissions and asked if i could be considered for a dual major. i had to e-mail admissions then and plead my case. they considered it and a few weeks later I received a letter letting me know i was accepted into the dual major. i really dont think putting the dual major down as your first choice major will hurt your chances…AT ALL! so go for it! it is a great program! oh and btw, my SAT math score was a 600. good luck!!!

rodney and twoparent…i know within whitman, as you said twoparent, you can double major. in newhouse you can’t! they actually require that you minor outside of newhouse unless you are a dual.
