So I currently finished the first semester of sophomore year. I am a straight A student in all honors (AP isn't offered until Junior year). I just registered for my Junior courses and I am taking the hardest possible classes and doubling up in science (meaning I'll have 2 full year science courses, 1 honors and 1 AP). I'm worried that my freshman grades will really affect my chances:
Honors American Studies (B+)
GHP Earth Science (A)
GHP Geometry (A-)
Honors French II (A-)
GHP Algebra 2 (A)
GHP English (A)
(GHP stands for Gifted/High Potential, but is basically CP, and is based on a 4.0 scale)
I had 2 math classes so I could be a year ahead and take honors college algebra this year. I have a number of ECs mostly concentrated in a particular interest (Environmental Science). I hold a leadership position in 1 and am part of an Envirothon team in another (academic competition). Additionally, I volunteer regularly and have 200+ hours from this past summer.
Basically my question is, even if I am able to keep up my grades during Junior year, how will my freshman grades affect my college admissions?
As of right now, I'm looking into Duke, University of Michigan, and University of Chicago.
Thanks! :)

Because those are such bad grades…

I don’t think my grades are horrible. I know that they were decent and everything, but are they good enough for the schools listed? I really thought that I should have taken more challenging courses.

You had one B, if you get rejected by those schools, grades won’t be the reason why.

you are absolutely fine, repeat freshman year three times and you’ll get into uMich.

I was accepted to michigan engineering last month with a 3.68 gpa and a 2080 sat

Freshman year doesn’t have that much weight when colleges are looking at your apps. Keep up the good work & start worrying if you begin to fall behind during your junior year. My cousin had a 3.2 her freshman year, showed major improvement over the years, & ended up going to Duke with a 3.8 unweighted. It’s good that you’re thinking about college, but don’t stress yourself out.

Do you really think some college is going to sit there and say, “We can’t accept you because you got this here B freshman year…otherwise we would”?

If you do get rejected from those schools, it certainly won’t be because of any of this.

Your Fine I had a friend with a 2.7 gpa get into Virginia Tech although he did get a 2200 on his SAT’s.

I agree that she’s fine, but Virginia Tech isn’t as selective as the schools she listed.

It’s not so much the B I was worried about, since it was honors, just the difficulty of my other classes. But thanks everyone, it was a lot of help! :)
