I was told that Data structures and algorithms is a very important class for computer science majors. I’m currently taking that class in my community college and with the end of the semester coming up, I’m worried about my grade in the class. Will getting a C in Data structures cause me to not get admitted into many schools CS programs?
While it is unlikely that this class alone will keep you out of a CS program, it is going to decrease your chances since you’re dropping in the applicant pool for a fixed number of spaces.
IMHO, though, you’ve been missing the bigger message. Your study habits are not getting the job done, or you may not have a strong aptitude for CS. Back in November you posted about possibly getting a C in a different CS class, blaming your difficulties on the instructor. To which @happymomof1 wrote
Now another class, another grade lower than you want. The advice above would have helped in that class and in this one. So it’s time to take a deep look at your study habits. Start with how much time you spend studying. Many math/science classes take 6-9 hours per week per class, and CS classes can be even higher due to the time spent debugging programs. If you’re putting in the time then perhaps it isn’t being spent effectively. There are websites about study habits, books such as “Make It Stick”, you can talk to the dept advisor in CS and fellow students to see what they do. And finally if you’re spending enough time and using all the best practices, then maybe CS isn’t the right major for you.
