Will going to NYLF this summer help me increase chances for getting into combined med programs? thnx

bump…

it may not directly help you get in, but it is a great experience. I went and I loved it. I got into a program, but I doubt it was entirely because of NYLF. Regardless, I used that experiences as the basis of one of my essays and would definately recommend going.

when i got that stuff it only looked like they were trying to make money off parents that want their kids to go into medicine
you’re better off using that money and doing a summer program at brown or harvard for credit

Ya, I agree with supersam. I have a few friends that went and had fun, but for such a short amount of time, it’s really expensive. I think they try to rip people off and it works. There are other better ways to use the same money.

I don’t know, I went to both nylf and the harvard program that summer and enjoyed both. If your still slightly on the edge about medicine as a career I would definately recommend it. We did so much all within just those ten days. I saw an operation, learned how to take a patient history, take blood pressure, debated medical ethics, and heard many great speakers (as well as participated in many other things). Every day was packed with a schedule of really cool things to do. It may seem like a lot of money for only a ten day trip, but I would still suggest it to anyone. They give you the oppertunity to take part in so much that you wouldn’t be able to experience on your own in just 10 days.

Agreed^^..

Went to the one in Philadelphia..and it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had.

I think it is a good experience, but I would doubt that it would help you much in your applications.

If you want an E.C. that would help you, try and find research or physician shadowing.

I went to the one in Philly also haha, thats 2 for Philly : )

bump.,…

I went to the one in Los Angeles @ UCLA this past summer. Overall, I’d say it was a fun experience. We visited LA area med schools, did the things Jenc89 mentioned, etc. But, we also went to universal studios, santa monica pier, the beach, a nice yacht cruise etc. I met alot of cool, awesome people there that I still keep in touch with as well.

My advice is, if your parents are willing to pay, go for it! It can’t hurt. I don’t know what sort of impact it’s had on my apps, but you should definitely do (like xcrunner suggested) doctor shadowing, research, maybe even an internship with a doctor you know well.

Btw, I saw my first cadaver at NYLF, that was sooo worth it.

I think you should be able to find some research opportunity or something better than NYLF. If not, and you’re willing to pay, then by all means go for it.

i know someone who went and they said they liked it.

but it prolly doesnt help too much on bs/md applications. if you’re gonna go, go for the experience and to learn about medicine. not for apps.

My friend went to that and didn’t get called for an interview at one of the programs. I, on the otherhand, did not do this program and was accepted to the BS/MD program at Virginia Commonwealth University

sf49rox, you can’t necessarily use your scenario to answer this question. you and your friend are two different people, different applicants, different stats, different essays, and referring to different programs. but either way i think nylf is a waste of money, go to Summer at Brown, Harvard, or Cornell and get some credit and take med-related classes while volunteering.

…errr i went to nylf anddd got accepted to the vcu program as well… lol obviously it is not the one program that will make or break your acceptance, but i support it. (i did the summer at harvard thing, would reccomend that as well)

What do you mean by the harvard summer program? Is this the Harvard Secondary Summer School program?

yuppp
thats the one
