Will going to the August Orientation harm my chances at getting the classes I need?

Since I'm oos and it would be more convenient to only have to make one trip down, I am considering doing the August orientation.

I was hoping that someone with experience can give my some input on the cons( or pros) of doing the August Orientation.

Here are my concerns:
1) That having to do orientation during move in will somehow interfere with my socializing, etc. I've already selected a roommate so I'm not so worried about meeting them for the first time since we've talked on the phone/facebook already but I am concerned about just getting to know my hall mates in general.

2) I dont want to miss out on registering for the classes I want. Right now (based on looking at the academic worksheets and the credit I'll have from AP/SAT) I'm thinking of taking Econ 101 stor 151 poli 100
RUSS 101 and a FYS as long as I pass my AP Psych test( and test out of Math 101)

1) It’s just orientation. You’ll have all the other people in your CTOPs date to meet, just like any other date. I met a few cool people at CTOPs, but we definintely are not close friends now. You should be able to meet all your hallmates maybe not in that first week, but definitely the second week. I’d say the super welcoming, friendly atmosphere lasts about a month before it goes back to its equilibrium level of friendliness.

2) I don’t think we have a Math 101, Algebra is Math 110. Russian should be no problem, Stor 151 (I think you’re thinking of 155) should open up within the first week or so. Econ 101 will be easy, Poli 100 might be difficult, FYS is pretty easy if you don’t care which one you get.

Basically- CTOPS registration sucks equally for everyone because they release the same amount of spaces at each one. People cry, etc. because it’s very stressful. You may not get your classes at CTOPs, but you SHOULD be able to get them all during the first 2 weeks of school b/c people add/drop all the time. Stalk your connect carolina and you should be a-ok. For FYS registration, easiest thing is to enter the class value as “less than or equal to – 99” and search for open classes.

It’s difficult for pretty much everyone to get the classes they want at CTOPS. You will see girls crying in the halls. Please don’t be that person; spots will shift around and open up in the the week before classes start, and it is not that difficult to at least get a few classes you want. Be open minded, because a class you might be initially uninterested in may become your major one day.

^ I’m a little freaked out because I don’t know what CTOPS is. Also, when does class registration begin? I definitely want to have my decision made before this date so that I don’t delay and end up w/ bad courses (or just those that I really really didn’t want).

Oh, and i’m guessing there is an orientation much earlier than the one in august. When would this be?

CTOPS = Orientation (I have no idea what it stands for)

Here’s what you need to do to prepare:

 • Look at the general education requirements and figure out what you need (PH, VP, LA, etc. Know what those mean)
 • Look at a few worksheets that advising has on their website (advising.unc.edu at the top of the page) for some of the majors you are considering. Look at the pre-reqs.
 • Now, try to get your pre-reqs and keep in mind what other courses you need for Gen. ed.
 • PUT YOUR PRE-REQS IN YOUR SHOPPING CART / PLANNER
 • Pick 5-10 other classes for gen eds CART/PLANNER
 • Get to know Connect Carolina. Learn how to search by number, subject, gen ed, etc.

When you’re registering (last day of CTOPS):
Step 1:

 • Try to get your specific pre-reqs first. Have them in your cart and try to check out immediately when they call time.
 • Keep refreshing/checking (always)
 • Try for other gen. ed classes. You need 12 hours to leave, so one option is to search for the gen ed requirement and check the box that says “open classes only.”
 • Use my patented FYS search to get an FYS (I’d also recommend getting an FYS to knock out a tough Gen. Ed. I used mine for a science credit)

STEP 2: (HOLY CARP I DIDN’T GET ANY OF THE CLASSES THAT I WANTED!!)

 • Stay calm. Search by gen ed or subject and only search for open classes. Get 12 hours, even if it means you’re in something horrible, just so they’ll let you leave.
 • Forget that you didn’t get your classes and wait until the first week of school.
 • Go back on Connect Carolina and get the classes that you want (might take up to a week of constant refreshing)

TA DA!

I have a question about CTOPS myself.
I had put down Undecided on my application, yet literally a week after sending in my application I had fully decided on a Business major.
Will I have the opportunity to inform whoever is helping me pick classes of this decision? I don’t want to be thrusted into a general education curriculum when I have prerequisite classes to get through. "/

?? You pick your own classes. No one is picking your classes for you. In fact, no one is really helping you pick your classes either. If you want to be pre-Business, pick pre-Business classes.
