So, after extensive study and numerous visits to various colleges, I have come to the conclusion that NYU is the place for me. I'm sort of dead set on it, but I want to make sure I'm not kidding myself.

GPA: 4.0
ACT: 30-English: 36 Reading:36 Math:23 Science: 26
APs: Junior year-APUSH, AP Gov, AP Lang
Senior year (planning on taking): AP Psych, AP Lit, AP Human Geography
Class Rank: 1 (but there are like, 60 people who are number 1 right now because we have a class of 900 and my school doesn't do weighted GPAs)

Extracurriculars/Achievements: Editor-in-Chief of school newspaper, National Honors Society officer, American History Club, Member of state champion Spanish fair team, 3 years high school soccer, 10 years of club soccer, 1 year dance company, Girls State Representative-Elected President of the Senate, Girls State Presidential Scholarship recipient, Nordstrom Fashion Board, Creative Writing Club, Young Democrats of Utah

I'm planning on joining a few more clubs and being involved in a few more things my senior year, but I am going to try to keep them pertinent to my intended major, which as of right now is between journalism and a political major of some sort.

NYU truly is my dream school, and I could use any advice you all may have to offer me. And don't be afraid to be real with me about my chances, better for me to prepare for disappointment now than to be crushed later.

Don’t break out the hankey just yet.
Your GPA is much better than your ACT score. NYU has an option whereby you can submit a set of AP scores instead of ACT or SAT. You should look into this and if it works for you I think you have a very good chance.

I think your perfect English and Reading ACT scores will jump off the page at any admissions officer who sees them, provided you weren’t considering Stern or the Engineering School (where your Math/Science scores would be much too low). Which school at NYU are you hoping to attend? I think you are only permitted to apply to one. I’d say Gallatin is a high match, and Arts & Sciences is a match.

@TempeMom Yes, my parents can afford it so that’s not too much of an issue as of right now. @woogzmama I was thinking Arts & Sciences, but would my low math and science scores still hurt my chances even at Gallatain or Arts & Sciences? I’m hoping that the perfect English and Reading scores make up for that but I’m not sure!

Gallatin is more selective, but it also has a history of accepting more idiosyncratic students, and so I think your Verbal scores would more than compensate for the Math and Science. I was asking simply because Gallatin is a little tougher to get into - it’s more like Reed or Bard within the university as a whole. I’d say that your chances at Arts & Sciences are very good (possibly with a nice merit scholarship); Gallatin would be harder to predict - I know some students who have gotten in with lower stats. You sound like just their sort of student: Young Democrats of Utah - what’s not to love?!?!

We have similar ACT scores (I also have a 30). Based on the comments I’m reading, that seems like its quite a problem. Of course I’m trying to increase it in any way I can, but I don’t understand why that seems to be a low point in your resumé. A 30 falls into their median acceptance percentages so without a doubt I encourage you to try and increase it, but its definitely not something that is a red flag in the application.
